HELP - Driving on UK License in Florida
 

Hi There,

My spouse and I have come to Florida with an company inter transfer on an L-visa, we are currently living in temporary accommodation provided by work and will not be moving into our apartment for another 3-4 weeks. I went to sit the Florida written driving test but could not sit the test because I did not have any proof of record of an address, the person at the driving test office said I was still legal to drive because my UK driving license is valid till 3-6 months in Florida and the USA. I asked the person at the driving test office could they provided any documentation to support that my UK driving license is valid but they could not.

Could anyone please advise where I can find this information or any other supporting information.

The 'official' Florida DMV

You must get a Florida license within 30 days of becoming a resident. You are considered a resident of Florida if you:

1. Enroll your children in public school, or
2. Register to vote, or
3. File for a homestead exemption, or
4. Accept employment, or
5. Reside in Florida for more than six consecutive months.

Current law requires customers to present proof of legal name, lawful presence, Social Security Number and two forms of residential address. If your name has ever been changed by marriage, divorce or court order, then you must present these documents. You will have to provide proof of any and all name changes. If you are not able to provide the necessary documents, you may be issued a 60-day temporary permit, providing your out-of-state license is valid or has been expired for 60 days or less. This will permit you to drive for 60 days while you are obtaining the documents.

Also, you can make an appointment. Appointments are recommended, but not required at most offices. Look at the list of offices–some are by Appointment Only. Otherwise, you can go to any office that is convenient.

Thank you for the information.

I went to the driving office yesterday to requested a 60-day temporary permit as stated in your message and I was told only persons from out-of-state with an america license can be issued with an 60-day temporary permit and my UK license is valid. This is second time I have been to the driving test office and come away with the same answers.

You will come across lots of jokes about the DMV and their incompetency.

I would e-mail them and see if you get that same answer in writing. If you do I would print a copy and keep it in my vehicle.
