I've seen people stop on roundabouts and wave people on.... When there is no other traffic.

It seems we live in the only state with a proper driving test. I had to reverse around a corner, merge into traffic on the freeway, parallel park, hill start, go round a few roundabouts, three-point turn...and all this in several inches of snow.

OP, it’s more than 25 years since I did my U.K. driving test so I’m unfamiliar with what you have to do and what can cause s fail but it’s unusual here for one error to cause a fail. Looking at my score sheet from my driving test here I would have had to have had at least 4 minor errors or two major errors to fail.

Anybody who claims that people here don't know how to drive should be on the downtown freeways at around 5-6 in the weekday evenings. I knew an airline pilot who refused to drive on the LA freeways at any time.

ditto that, chicago is like the indy 500.

OP, dont sweat the physical test, but do spend time revising the theory. you may be able to find online simulator tests at your local DMV website in texas,.

Welcome to Texas!

I took my test five years ago. I took some lessons locally first, as I hadn't driven since failing my UK test about eighteen years before. The test itself is very easy, just make sure you obey the school zone speed limits and stop signs.

You will want to stay driving pretty quickly. You cannot walk to access much, except maybe in a few areas in or close to downtown Houston. The Woodlands is its own almost self-contained suburb. Traffic can get busy there, but not dangerous in the way it can be on the busier freeways in rush hour, or around The Galleria.

Good luck!

That's debatable. City maybe. I did mine in Everett and it was super easy. I didn't have to do any of that.

This just happened to me yesterday. They put in a roundabout outside a Home Depot.
This older guy in a big pick up is circling the roundabout. There is no other traffic around. As I approach, I stop my car anticipating he'll keep coming, like a normal person. He stops, and then gestures me to pull onto the roundabout. I suspect he was trying to be kind but I just shook my head and said, this isn't how this works.

Good luck! All the best people fail the first time ......
If nothing else, get in a few lessons in an automatic, assuming you went the 'normal' route and took your lessons in a manual - once you take changing gear out of the equation you'll find things a lot less stressful as a new driver and can devote your concentration on the US national pastime, texting while driving.
