Re: Help on choosing a place in California
understand, you'll have a tough task hitting everything on your hit list for your price. Revisit what you can afford to spend on housing if you can - that has the biggest impact on if you'll get your hit list covered. I find the climate in West LA very similar to Barcelona, further inland, or just 10miles north or south, the climate alters quite significantly - much more then I'd ever believe possible having lived in Europe. Trying to find a place to fit your family, and be in a good school district, and be near the beach and the airport - well..all do-able, but not for $2k. I rent out a 2 bedroom small house, that's 6 miles (as the bird flys) from the ocean - 15 minute drive to the beach, and in a BAD school district, for $2300 (no utilities).
Note private schools in LA are outrageous - most are in the $26k-$34k. You may want to look into El Segundo - its *right* by LAX, it's *right* by the ocean, it has the West LA climate and I've heard the Wiseburn school district, which serves part of El Segundo, is a hidden gem. It's not the coolest, sexiest place to live, but I think it hits your wish list, and will be the lowest cost place for your factors - even there though, I still think $2k will be tough.
Good luck,
Matt

El Segundo?
Just west/south of LAX and you may find some nice places there for that price point.
Redondo Beach, close to the beach, good schools and "family" restaurants will have a 2-bed apartment for around 2000, but the drive to the airport will be 30 mins depending on time of day.
Manhattan Beach $2700 (great area-high budget): http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...371793014.html
Redondo Beach $2395 (family area-clean, nice, further from airport but good "local" amenities) http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...353837531.html
Nice place but further from beach: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...372415305.html
This is slightly more but another nice find: http://losangeles.craigslist.org/wst...371557304.html
As you head toward the beach you end up paying a premium, they also get snapped up around this time of year as people want to be there for the summer.
LA rent doesn't go very far... sorry!!
