Help with CA drivers licence

Ok, my positon, I have file for AOS after entering on a K3 visa. I have a temporary permission to work card with what I believe is my alien number A09xxxxxxx. I would like to get a CA drivers licence but the website says I need a social security number. Someone mentioned that maybee I use my alien number. So what do I need. Also do I give this alien number to employers as my ss number. Thanks.

You need a Social Security number. You can use your A# to apply for one.

I used my foreign SSN (also 9 digits) to get my MN license. No problem at
all, as long as they had 9 digits to put down. The license almost expired
now and never had a problem with it.
Applying for a SSN will take its time, after 9-11 last year they have to
check with everyone and everything. Can take between 30 and 90 days, mine
took about 40 (WI)

Re: Help with CA drivers licence

the procedure is as follows:-
go to the nearest DMV office and tell them you need a driver's license
but don't have a social security no. they will provide you with a
letter stating that a social security no. is reqd for u to get a
drivers license.
take that letter to an SSA (social security office) and apply for a
social security no. they will ask for ur immigration papers and hand u
a social sec. no in a week's time. apply for a d/l with the social
sec. no and ur immigration papers.
both drive's license and social security nos. can be (and are) given
to individuals who are lawfully present in the U.S (irrespetive of
whether they have work authorization or not). further, neither is
indicative of naturalization/work authorization.

Used to work, but not anymore. The Social Security administration does
not give out SSNs to people who are not authorized to work anymore.
See

<<<
Effective March 1, 2002, the Social Security Administration no longer assigns Social Security
Numbers when the sole reason for needing an SSN is to comply with a State statute that requires an
SSN for issuance of a driver's license.

That is FRAUD and hopefully you will get caught and deported. Obviously a
SS# requested in the United States is supposed to be a number issued by the
Social Security Administration. You really shouldn't advise people to
commit fraud unless you also advise them of the possible consequences the
fraud could have to their ability to remain in the U.S. if they are caught.

The SSA will NOT issue an SSN unless you have work status. Go to the
SSA site, print out the page and then go to the DMV and tell them that
they cannot require an SSN. CA has definitely issued DLs without SSNs
in the past.

well.....

I have temporary work status while I wait for my green card interview so I guess that will be ok.

I showed the DOT of Minnesota my SSN, which was printed in my foreign
passport, told them the situation and they were ok with it. So no, I won't
get caught and won't be deported.
Why would it, all they want is to linkt the DL to one single person, with a
copy of my passport and foreign SS# this is also possible, there is no
problem. A friend of mine did the same, he had some problems but in the main
office in St. Paul they eventually gave him his license.
Hopefully in your next posting you will at least consider that jumping into
conclusions can offend people.

The SSA will issue an SSN without a work status (see form SS-5). You need
proof why you need an SSN. Wait like 40 days and you'll have an SSN with the
line "not allowed to work without INS approval" on your card.
Otherwise, the SSA can give you a signed letter why you can't have a SSN and
that might do with the DMV, I know it's acceptable in court for legal
issues.

As I've said and others have said ... a drivers license is NOT
sufficient proof as to needing an SSN.

I read that in another posting too, but that's not what I wrote. Get a
signed letter from the SSA and try to use this letter to get a license. That
letter works as substitute for an SSN in court.

paullees Nov 2nd 2002 3:04 pm

but...

As I have a temporary work permit all this is irelevant because they have to give me a ss number. Kind of feel this thread lost its track!

SSA will also issue an SSN if you need it for Government related business,
like obtaining SS benefits but obtaining a state drivers' license does not
qualify. Most DMV's also will give you a drivers license if you can get a
letter from the SSA showing that you cannot obtain an SSN, and you can show
documentation that shows that you are legally in the US. One good example
of this is someone on H-4 status.
