Heathrow Airport- Hand Luggage.

Heathrow Airport- Hand Luggage.
I found something out yesterday that I did not know... According to the United Airlines website anyone travelling to or via Heathrow may have only 1 piece of hand luggage total. In the past you could have a hand bag or diaper bag in addition to your hand luggage but seems now it all has to be in one.
I think it is a good move... maybe next time I fly I will be able to get a bag into the over head bin!

I don't know about flights into the UK...I fly Continental and they don't have that restriction. It is certainly true from all flights out of the UK...one piece of hand luggage only. At Manchester airport the staff at the security checks were sending people back to check in if they had more than one piece of hand luggage...and they were being quite abrasive about it.
I think the 1 bag policy is a good idea.

While I also think it's a good idea, I think that exceptions should be made for those carrying laptops! Regular size laptop bags (not laptop 'backpacks') do not exactly hold more than the laptop and its accessories.

I like the new rules, I definitely think its made boarding and disembarking quicker. Having said that, I'm an adult male with no children, even my missus can condense her crap, I mean essentials, down into one (admittedly TARDIS like) bag.

There's no rules saying you can't put a bag in a bag. You can stick a handbag/laptop bag inside a bigger carry on and not break the rules.

Alternately, if it is about traffic at the airport, then add more security check line-up areas!! At the entrance to terminal 3, there are two, and only one is functional, even at peak hours!!!
And if it's about overloading the cabin and taking up more space than you are allowed to, then what about obese people ? Then they should not be allowed to go through at Heathrow unless they prove that they have paid for two seats. That actually is far more important than stopping someone carrying a small 'extra' laptop bag... I mean, have you ever had to take up only HALF the seat you paid for, because there is a fat person sitting next to you?

They brought this rule in the 1st January, we flew back from Garwick on the 8th Jan, I had a small back pack and a handbag I was told only one piece of hand luggage so I said no problem I would put it in my back pack as it was half empty, I was told no I had to empty it out into my back pack and then put the handbag into my check in luggage. I asked why they were doing it and was told that because all hand luggage had to be searched it was causing long delay's and at Christmas the lines for getting through had up to a 3 hour wait. The lady at the check in desk also said that the Americans were the worst offenders for wanting to carry on lot's of hand luggage.

Personally I'd be all for banning all hand luggage except something laptop/briefcase/handbag/small backpack sized. It seems over here many travellers have some sort of pathological fear of checking luggage. Take on the flight only what you will need and check the rest.... if nothing else it makes going to the departure lounge toilets a lot easier if you're not lugging a case behind you...

I wonder if this is a recent crackdown? I flew out of LGW in mid-July and plenty of ladies were putting their handbags inside a larger shopping bag and weren't told to go back and check one of them.

yes that's ok, i do that. i put my handbag into my laptop bag. the only reason they do it is to try to move along the lines that form at the security.

Although someone earlier said this rule was from January 2007...my experience was a few weeks later so maybe they were just being over zealous and things have calmed down a little now.
