Healthcare for Maternity care in US?!

Hi,

Bit of a complicated question this one...

We're L1a qualifying (saw immigration lawyers in London last week) but are going to wait another 9-12 months before actually applying to get it (its my own business etc etc).

However i'm 30, my partner is 36 and you can hear her clock ticking.

I've read that most PMI policies wont cover you for maternity care unless you have opted for this feature and there is a fairly lengthy time period where you cannot claim under it.

Therefore this could potentially throw a really expensive spanner in the works or delay the move to Cali by quite a while if the prospect of being faced with an insane medical bill if any complications were to arise.

From what I can gather my choices are either:

1) Dont get pregnant till US PMI covers maternity care
2) Do it all in UK on NHS then go US as planned but massively delayed
3) pay thru the nose for PMI cover as an existing "condition"??
4) Regardless of pregnant or not proceed with plans, pay the costs for PMI as you would anyway and take a punt on whether I get stung with some larger than anticipated bills if timescales mean we're not totally covered...

I'd love to know how anyone else has coped with the "starting a family" issue within the first year of moving to the US?

Thanks in advance.

Tom

on edit: its also worth noting that theres no guarantee we'll get preggers within our expected timeframes but its certainly something we need to get answers to...

Quite honestly, if my employer wanted me to work in the US, they would be giving me the healthcare insurance rather than me having to obtain private healthcare insurance. Just a thought.

Employer offered healthcare will pay for pregnancy costs from day one. There is no waiting period that I have ever been made aware of.

Right... so it would be me buying a Group policy to cover me (plus family) as the business owner and any employee's that join...

So I guess I need to find out about group/employer policies!

If you are not married, there may be additional considerations to explore: http://personalinsure.about.com/od/health/a/dp101.htm

or you could get married, of course.
