I'm not sure if there is a real issue here. Each state is engaged in interstate commerce and it makes sense to have country-wide warning labels as opposed to state specific warning labels. So there will be warning labels, but organized at the Federal level. In many cases this will make more sense. Beef cattle reared in Iowa are going to be eaten by folks all over the country, same goes for lettuces grown in California. Fish caught in the Atlantic will end up on plates across the nation, etc. etc. Fish caught in shallow sea water might need different warning labels from those caught in deeper waters. Tuna being one example. Tuna are not caught in one river in one state! :)

But you have to comply with the laws of individual states in order to do business in those states anyway. So what's the problem with states requiring their own labeling? All this beef in Idaho stuff is just a red herring.

Its all about making it easier for the food companies, some states require more inofrmation others require less, this way the government can decide what you do or do not know. Its because the people in washington know more than you do and as such you cannot be trusted to make your own decisions - they have to do that for you. It is not in your best interest to know that there is arsenic in your water. Now do be good citizens and do as your told and support the long war (war formerly known as the war on terror)

It's simple - if it says partially or fully hydrogenated soybean/cottonseed/vegetable oil or High Fructose Corn Syrup on the ingredients list, put it back on the shelf, its poison.

Shows that the US government puts business before consumer interests/health. No surprise there.

Depends ... there is something in the U.S. Constitution ("the highest law in the land") called the Supremacy Clause, which essentially acts as a restraint on state powers. Not forgetting, the Commerce Clause, which can also act as a restraint on State Powers. Where the Feds tread under either clause, the states shall give way.

Then there's the Spending Power clause (again found in the U.S. Constitution), which can be used to make states comply with Federal wishes. For example, if the government wants the states to legislate for a particular speed limit on a particular type of road, the Feds can, under the U.S. Constitution, insist that that freeway funding will be provided conditional on a state legislating for a particular speed limit. Of course, states can pass laws and then fail to enforce them, the Feds know this and use Spending Power at will to ensure compliance. blah blah

It makes perfect sense! Why should it be different state to state? Just go with the most comprehensive and use that!
