Have EAD card but cannot get SSN !!!

Hi all,

My wife received her EAD card in March. She applied for her SS card about a month ago and did not receive it. We went into the office today and the lady said that the INS have not updated their computers to show the EAD status. Basically the Social security office uses the EAD card # to look up her status. It came back as invalid or something like this.

The lady said it might take some time for the INS computers to get updated with her EAD status. But I wouldn't think it would take 2 months!!! Have any of you heard of something like this happenieng? What can my wife do now?

Any advice or personal experiences would be helpful!

Thanks,

- khabibiuf

Unfortunately I have seen cases where it takes months for INS to update applicant's
status on their computers. So the SSA cant really issue a SSC until the INS gets its
act together. It took about 3 months for my Friend's sister who just got her GC to
get a SS card. "khabibiuf" <[email protected]> wrote in message

Re: Have EAD card but cannot get SSN !!!

We're having a similar problem with the INS not updating their computers - though it's not as bad as your problem, as I already have a SS#.

I needed to get my name changed from my maiden name to my married name on the SS card. (We had problems with the IRS not recognising my number, as we filed taxes in my married name, instead of my maiden name). We went to the SSA and they typed in my Alien number - but they wouldn't change my card because they said that the INS hadn't updated their computers with my new name.

The SS lady took a photocopy of my AOS approval letter and said she'd write to the INS for us - telling them to change their database. That was about a month ago and we haven't heard anything since then.

I e mailed the SSA through their website and they gave me a 1-800 number to call - I figured I'd wait awhile longer though.

So, I can't help you really, but just thought I'd share our similar situation. Hope things move along for us all soon.

Very odd. I picked up my EAD card from the downtown Los Angeles office, and walked in
to the SSA office on the way home, applied for the SS card two hours after receiving
the EAD and it went without a hitch. Got the card in the mail 8 days later.

I guess it depends on which INS office processes your EAD.

Re: Have EAD card but cannot get SSN !!!

yep I didn't have a problem either. Received my EAD in the mail on a Friday, went to
the SS office Monday. Called the 800# and got my new SS# over the phone on Wednesday
and received the card in the mail on Friday.

I would suggest trying a different SS office. Sometimes you gotta go from office to
office till you find one that will process it for you.

Re: Have EAD card but cannot get SSN !!!

EAD and eligibility issues aside, some states will issue a SS# if one is required,
for example, to get a driver's license. You might want to try that route - I got my
SS# in under a week in Kentucky - and I was not required to show anything having to
do with INS.

Hi All!

Well the rules have changed.

http://ssa-custhelp.ssa.gov/cgi-bin/...refno=001101--
000011&p_created=973082930

Effective March 1, 2002, the Social Security Administration will no longer assign
Social Security Numbers when the sole reason for needing an SSN is to comply with a
State statute that requires an SSN for issuance of a driver's license.

Take care,

Mike :)

As Mike's post said, it's all changed now. Simon was able to get a letter from the
clerk's office stating he needed a SSN in order to get a DL. This was in February
2001. This same SSN office now states you have to show proof of adjusted status to
apply for card, and are not accepting needing a number for a DL as a reason to
process an application, and the clerk's office no longer issues that letter. There
was a big article in the Lexington Herald-Leader some months back about the new
changes for immigrants and DL's, and it stated that certain items would be needed for
renewal. Can't remember exactly what, though.
