Has anyone gone back to the Uk for a holiday without their spouse/partner/family?
Hi all,
I`ve been a member of BE for a little while, but mainly content to look rather than a participate.
Anyway, reason i`m writing is because i`m feeling dreadfully homesick at the moment, and i asked my US wife if i could go back to the UK for a short holiday, maybe 1 - 2 weeks. My wife wouldn`t be able to come due to work commitments. She said yes i could go, but i`d feel really guilty about going without her, but at the same time, i do feel i need to go back even just for a short time to see my family and friends and get my "fix" of things British.
Any advice about what i should do?
Regards,
Gazza

Why not sounds like a good idea. Doesn't sound like the weather is good at the moment though

I'm off to the UK for a month on 3rd August (but possibly going off to the Med with my mum, my sister and her family for a fortnight, they're planning to book something tomorrow!).
I've lived overseas for more than 12 years now and go 'home' at least once a year. My husband tries to join me if he can.....but I just have to go home on an annual trip or I think our marriage would be strained. It does help I guess that he is English too, but even in a cross-cultural marriage I think that it's a given that one of the partners needs to go to their home country from time to time to 'reconnect' and keep in touch with their culture, family and friends.
Anyway.....absence makes the heart grow fonder.....it's nice meeting up again when you've spent a little time apart!

I don't see any dilemma.. your wife is happy for you to go.
Think you are a very nice husband to not want to leave your wife But if she is OK and understands, then go, you will be happier for it.
My OH goes away all the time for business and I quite like being myself and doing my own thing for a while

Yes, home doesn't count as a holiday - in a nice way.

Re: Has anyone gone back to the Uk for a holiday without their spouse/partner/family?
Thanks Sally, Englishmum and irn bru.
It make me feel a lot better knowing that other people have gone back to the UK for hols without their other halves. Our marriage has been put under a lot of strain recently due to my homesickness. But, at the same time, i`ve not wanted to go without her. Plus spending all that money IE airfares etc, while she`s slaving away.
I live in Florida in a quiet area, but even with all the rain in the UK at the mo, i`d still choose the UK over the sunshine of Fl at the mo. And i miss all the cultural life and "buzz" of London and the UK.
It`s strange, i`ve done a lot of traveling over the years IE backpacking thru OZ, Asia and Europe when i was younger and hardly ever felt homesick, but now i`ve been in Florida for only 6mths, and i`m feeling homesick.

BTW it doesn't matter how long you've spent travelling overseas...you can't begin to compare it to immigrating.

Hear, hear, you wise woman!
I go back 2-4 times a year - almost always on my own. After all I go back to see my friends and go out to the opera and theatre every night.......... he'd only get in the way!

I would go but feel a little like you. I've been with my two boys - left hubby here, we loved it and will do it again next year. We didn't think of this as a family holiday, just getting to see friends and family and keeping in touch with everyone. As someone said getting your fix of the English culture.
Don't know why I would feel a little guilty - husband travels (not as much as he used to) and I'm left here with the boys.
Have a wonderful time.

Has your spouses/partners etc ever commented on the money on airfares and spending money etc while they`ll busy working?
