Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
I'm what I consider to be a casual ebayer but I've been on there for quite a while and obviously would like to move my feedback and all that over.
So, has anybody 'moved' their account to the US? My understanding is that you mainly change your address, is that it? Anything to be aware of? |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
Can be done - you can sign into eBay USA with your UK credentials and just update your address and location. Do the same with your credit cards in PayPal (though I think you will need your UK bank details on hand to be able to do this, if memory doesn't deal me a dog turd.)
Actually for a while, when I still had a UK bank account with money in it and a valid switch card, I ordered items of eBay USA, paid via PayPal with my Brit debit card and had it shipped to me. It was only recently when I bought a new keyboard for $800.00 I had to change my PayPal account to have my US credit card info. True to form, I've used 500 words when 5 will do. Yes, you can do it and very easily. You will get all your notifications from eBay UK though for some reason, but via 'My eBay' everything appears in $ and not £. Hope that helped :) |

Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
I did it from Australia to France if that's any help.

Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
Thanks all, that suggests that there is *one* easy thing on this move...
|
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
Somehow, eBay and PayPal never quite caught up with me: to buyers it shows my actual current location but it still "translates" everything into GBP and gives me UK options by default. Annoying.

Ended up creating a new paypal account in France. |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
It can't seem to handle a US address and a UK bank account/debit/credit card. Or have things changed?
I can't use my US bank details because they're shared with my spouse in a joint account and she's already registered on eBay. When I try to register it to me it gets refused. |

Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
I emailed ebay and changed mine but I also get notifications from ebay.co.uk
It's a nuisance seeing things in pounds but you only get this when you click through your emails. Has anybody sorted this one? |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
I think the thing that might be throwing it is the PayPal part, maybe not the eBay part, but that's just a stab in the dark. I said it was annoying but it's not really annoying enough for me to have bothered hassling customer service about it. I can still buy stuff from my local market and my buyers still see the right place, so...

Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
i think i moved my location from UK to us ON EBAY and had no issues with ebay BUT i had to close my uk paypal and reopen a US paypal (used same uk email address tho lol) as they were unable to change my location and i didnt want wrong addresses involved anywhere.

Well, some of us use $300 keyboards on our computers...

Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
Depends on the exchange rate - there is (or at least used to be) a UK-made ergonomic one that is close to $800. Only keyboard I know of that you can rent for a trial period.

Except... I had a credit Sterling balance on the UK Paypal account which prevented a simple change. Had to set up a new US Paypal account then transfer the balance across by converting to USD and paying myself. |

Only to re-think 'oh they mean a musical piano type keyboard thingy'. Well I hope that is what they mean! I wouldn't spend $50.00 on a computer keyboard, but you don't even want to know the prices of some of the musical ones I am eyeing up  |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
Guess it depends on how much time you spend in front of a keyboard, but trust me, a good keyboard is worth the money if you work with computers a lot.
Mind you, I pretty much have to use specific ergonomic keyboards (proper ones, not what MS and the likes think is an ergonomic keyboard) for various reasons anyway. |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
You are, of course, correct but my work with computers usually extends to not much more than time wasted in front of You Tube and Flight Simulator!
I can see how my wrists would feel the effects of a cheap keyboard if I did spend more time actually typing though, if I have to type a lot in work I feel it. I certainly feel it after playing piano for a few hours, but I guess those keyboards are as ergonomic as they are going to get . . . |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
I have a question for any seasoned Ebay/Paypal users here.
In the UK we have the Online Royal Mail postage thingymajig, where you can purchase stamps online in the form of a barcode label, stick into onto your parcel and then just drop it off at the post office. No need to queue up for ages. I'm a regular Ebay user and this is the method I've been using for quite a few years. I was wondering if the postal service in the States has a similar kind of service. |

Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
I changed the address over myself in 'My eBay' section and linked it with my new US Paypal account. It was annoying for the first few months showing prices in GBP, I contacted eBay customer service about it several times, but they had no idea how to fix this. Fortunately after a few months for unknown reasons it changed to USD, and I haven't had this problem since.

Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
Hi, I have stumbled accros this website and was wondering if you could help me. I have a aussie ebay account and would like it to be changes to a US ebay account as it is much cheaper for lisiting fees on the usa site for usa account holders. Do I need a usa address for this? Is this possible to change my current aussie account .
Also to have a usa paypal account do i need a usa bank account or usa address? thanks |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
I had issues with eBay/Paypal after the move. Changing your address won't do it. You need to sort out the fact that Paypal has your 'billing currency' as GBP. Also you may have issues with eBay thinking you are still in the UK.
I did the eBay live chat thing to sort out everything so that ALL settings in eBay recognised me as fully 'US-ready'. For Paypal, you can change your billing currency via the link on ebay as described here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/bill...rency.html#how |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
I haven't read all the posts here, but my 2 cents worth,
Changed EBay over, but still get some UK references sent to me via email. Couldn't do it with Paypal so I shut my account down and opened a new one. |
Re: Has anybody 'moved' their ebay account from the UK to the US
PayPal requires that you close your existing account and re-open a new one in the other country. They don't allow you to simply switch your account's registered country, apparently due to legal constraints and financial regulations.
You could just open a new account without closing the old one, but that's technically against PayPal's Terms of Service. Each person is only permitted to have one personal and one business account. Your eBay account can be switched over to another country easily, no problem. I've done that twice myself. |

For Paypal, you can change your billing currency via the link on ebay as described here: http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/bill...rency.html#how I spent 1 hour and 46 minutes on live chat with a muppet, before I turned up your post. Changing the billing currency appears to be the key - it sets the "registration site" field in the back end of your account records to whatever country's currency you select and it appears to be this field that ebay uses when deciding to apply regional policies, not your address or the fact that your account is linked to a US paypal account. So, I followed your instructions and that fixed it. No thanks to the ebay muppet. I believe that this step may be the definitive step in properly porting an ebay account from the UK to another country. Might be worth sticking it in one of the wiki pages, if anybody can think of an appropriate place. |

Tack it to the end of that page as a Misc to banking perhaps? |

If my theory is correct, ebay will block you from bidding, citing the ebay.co.uk knives policy. Then follow BG36's instructions and try again. If it lets you, then the hypothesis has not been falsified. |
