I'm happy the city of Chicago has just passed a law requiring big-box stores to pay their workers a livable wage, such that someone working a 40 hour week is just above the poverty level.

This works out to roughly $10/hour and $3/hour in benefits.

Wal-Mart is already suing.

HD pulled out of Buenos Aires years ago, as they found people didn't want to shop there, preferred to support the mom and pops.

Great that there seems to be a move toward that here. I support my local mom and pops as much as possible. In fact, dh who is a whizz at stuff, says that often mom and pop places are cheaper than HD. Pays to shop around, because most people assume the opposite.

Perhaps if they applied themselves to life and education, they wouldn't be reduced to scanning groceries for $7 an hour. Nobody in my family ever lowered themselves to such modern slavery. Thank God for initiative, education and networking.
