H1B mix-up
I got laid off in last week of November 2001, while my H1B was in force. H1B got 2 more years on it.
I applied to a community college for spring semester admission and sent the change of status app to Laguna within 12 working days of my termination with required money details shown in my account, using certified mail.
Later say after 12 working days I mailed my termination letter copy and family visa details copies too to INS, using certified mail. In cover letter to INS I wrote my not going to community college in that semester plus my moving to new state. As I did not have LIN number at that time, I linked my 2nd mail to the 1st mail using 1st mails' postal department number.
Then I decided to not to go school in spring semester but delay it to the fall, community college agreed for this too. Community college told me that new I-20 will be issued in April's 3rd week.
In 1st week of Jan I came to Texas, and last week got a jgood job offer, with company sponsorship for H1B visa. I still has to talk with company attorney in coming 4-5 days, including weekend period.
Now around 4+ months have already passed without hearing any thing from INS, and in post 9/11 period, I am dreadedful with many fears.
1. I never got LIN number, may be it was mailed after I left after i left my previous apartment, and was not forwarded to me. Who knows where i am with INS
2. will I be able to join this new job or already I have committed harakiri.
3. Is there any probable way which attorney will able to show me, or I have crossed all the limits.
Please feel free to add your inputs, as whole familys' short term future is at stake. Thanks in advance.

Re: H1B mix-up
Folks in my original message, I found very poor coherency, however the information is correct.
Actually first I decided not to go college and go to Texas from california and look for job, and then i wrote that 2nd letter to INS declaring my intentions.
Sorry for mix up.

You won't get a LIN number because Laguna Niguel issues WAC numbers. LIN are Nebraska
numbers. But that's beside the point. You should call the INS during business hours
(be very patient and keep calling! You'll spend several hours redialing, and then
another hour or two on hold until you can talk to a human. They can look up your case
by name and give you the WAC number.
Most likely, you are right - the letter was sent to your previous address.
>2. will I be able to join this new job or already I have committed harakiri.
It's a messup, but you did not break the law by messing up the case - and that is the
key point here, fortunately. You did fall out of status, though, because you sent the
first change of status request only 12 days after losing the job. INS will most
likely excuse that, though.

I think a good attorney should be able to straighten this out!
