H1B expires 5/03, options to stay in US?
First off, thank you to all who contribute to making this site a very valuable source of information!
My current H1 is being renewed and should be valid thru May 2003, after which it will be expired. I am trying to assess my options, if any, and figure out a way to stay in the US
1. what if I don't do anything between now and then?
- aside from not being able to work, would I be forced to leave the US within a specific time frame?
- if so, would I still be eligible to work in the US later?
- could I stay in the US under a student visa?
- ...another visa?
2. what do I need to do now?
- am I still OK with regards to starting a Green Card application?
- any other options?
Thank you,
Fred

Actually, it's not a site at all but a newsgroup. But I still hope it's useful

Within 10 days.

Yes. You can get another H-1B after you have been physically outside the US
for one year.

Yes, if you qualify and apply for a change of status before your H-1B expires.

Depends on what you plan to do after 05/03!

You can start a GC application at any time. Do be aware that if the GC isn't approved
by the time the H-1B expires (which is very likely), you won't be able to renew it.
You can still try to change to tourist or student status, although this will quite
likely be denied because of your proven intent to immigrate to the US.
