An option that is not open to spouses of H1bs, of course - unless said spouse is able to get an H1b position in his/her own right.

Exactly. And with no health insurance a trip to the Dr's or the Hospital would be very expensive. As someone else posted before, even if you can only afford crappy coverage, get crappy coverage as the medical facilities will still give you the health insurance price as apposed to the $500 box of tissues price.
