Grrr...no more Pataks....
Apprantly the FDA have added Pataks to the list of things that can't be imported...the local Co-op was having a bit of a clearance of the stuff and trying to find a replacement, but apparantly most of the range of Pataks products won't be allowed to be imported anymore....
hmmm...somewhat gutted as I loved the spicy mango chutney... |

hmmm...somewhat gutted as I loved the spicy mango chutney... Although Pataks is all we can get at the moment, I much prefer the flavor of Tiger Tiger products that we used to get at World Market. Sadly, we don't have a World Market anywhere near us where we are currently located. |
Re: Grrr...no more Pataks....
Well, I don't know what the heck a Patak is, but sorry to hear your bad news! I know I'd throw a hissy if they stopped allowing Galaxy Bars!

Re: Grrr...no more Pataks....

Re: Grrr...no more Pataks....

Re: Grrr...no more Pataks....
Couldn't find Pataks, so it must be on this months list, seems I'm eating illegal pickled onions though :D It's surprising what is refused entry.

Oh dear - Rizhao Huayang Farming And Aquatic Prod Shandong haven't been allowed to import their babyfrozen octopus - apparently they " appear to consist in whole or in part of a filthy, putrid, or decomposed substance or be otherwise unfit for food". Always told Mrs Yorkie she shouldn't be eating that stuff :D .

Actually the only one I ever knew in my life to eat pickled pigs feet was my mother. She was born and raised in Germany and didn't migrate until age 23. Yuckie. |

Oooh - I love a pigs trotter!! Mother in law cooks them long and slow in loads of soy sauce. Gorgeous! And did you know, the Chinese call them Pigs Hands, not trotters, or feet. totally useless bit of trivia for you! |

I also went to the Pataks site and found no news there either.

Re: Grrr...no more Pataks....
If any of you pining for Pataks has Asian (aka Indian) grocery stores near you, it's worth popping in and searching for authentic Indian or Pakistani made products to replace the Pataks.
Never used any Pataks products before, only the Asian manufactured stuff. In fact, I used a curry powder said to Madras that was made in Thailand and there was no heat in it at all. NC Penguin |

Anyone here not read Food Nation? What an eye-opener! Give me our "potentially-possibly-one chance in a million" BSE risk beef any day! As for Patak's: I'm gutted! I usually host a curry evening 2 weeks before or after Thanksgiving - what the heck am I going to do now? If this is true, I guess I'll have to go back and do it all from scratch, i.e. take a leaf out of Madhur Jaffrey's book... BTW, I hear she's in the new Meryl Streep movie - I think it's called 'Prime'. Still going strong at over 70! |

Back to the bland and boring New England food then. If its spicy burritos its ok then but not spicy curry.

Re: Grrr...no more Pataks....
I was just wondering if the list referenced is infact import refusals for the companies of these products who are trying sell the products commercially OR is it a list of confiscated products from individuals entering the country.
Here in the Cleveland Ohio area "World Market" has some of the products mentioned for sale and the labelling is fine. Most of the products available in World Market are imported by a specific USA company and have been approved by the FDA. |
Re: Grrr...no more Pataks....
I really don't know the answer to that, the USA list is quite funny though....

Re: Grrr...no more Pataks....
back to the pataks...the main grocery store in town, Hannafords/Shop N Save, well the shelves that had the Pataks had all the re-stock barcodes on the shelves scribbled out, and they won't be restocking when the stuff is sold out as well apparantly...all depends on what they can get, but basically it's looking like it's not worth the effort as they will be seriously limited in what they can get hold of to not make the imports worthwhile....
So anyone got any alternatives to look out for? |
