Greensboro, NC--housing advice
 

Dear All,

For those of you living in Greensboro, here's a question regarding a family of two adults & 2 very small childern temporarily there (actually two :o ):

-Would you rent a house or an apartment? Pros and cons?
-What areas to consider for a premium rental place (good neighborhood & safety main criteria, size, new house and appearance secondary)?
-Anyone living in the area of Tower Rd & Sherman St? Expericene there (positives and negatives for a housewife)? Is it a safe place to be?

Have you lived in the area a while? Have you been in the US for a while?

If you're fresh off the boat, rent. It's a no brainer.

You've got no credit history, it costs a lot more to flog a house and so renting gives you time to also figure out what's important to you in a house, check out the schools, find out the quirks for property taxes and the like.

Plenty of threads on that aspect of things.

As for locations, no idea, on your own on that one, but there might be past threads to get you started and also city-data.com would be another good starting point.

Rent first. That's the universal rule of a relocation unless you have extensive 'feet on the ground' experience with an area. There are simply too many factors you cannot realize 'just off the boat' from things like how close is the nearest fire station, school, convenience store to what happens when there is a high school football game nearby (noise) or if it snows and this street doesn't get plowed. Rent first.

City-data is a relocation message board with far more in-depth knowledge about neighborhoods, schools, etc. We frequently recommend it for people with 'neighborhood to live in' type questions. I would recommend checking out there message site and see what you can discover.

Well I used to live in Greensboro but admittedly it was a few years ago now, but going by the address you've given I'd definately think about else where...the area isn't bad but its not great either, try and get somewhere above W Friendly Ave.

If your renting an apartment, try the complex on Brassfield Road, here check it out..

these apartments probably have one of the best addresses in greensboro, and right next to Battleground Ave which has all the shops on and the local cinema.

ouch...looks like a new management company has come in and pissed everybody off, maybe not such a good idea..

if your renting a house again try and get somewhere above west friendly ave, some great communities on Horse pen Creek rd, Westridge Heights, Friendly Acres North and my favourite place ever Country Woods Lane ..:thumbsup:, this is an older sub division but filled with lovely houses at affordable prices and some great people live there..

We used to live in Winston-Salem, and whilst I can't comment on the best areas to live in Greensboro I can say that for the first 6 years we lived in the US we rented apartments. It worked for us, and our son had plenty of playmates around. We rented in 3 different apartment complexes and each one had a playground, pool etc. We had no issues, and to be honest in some ways I miss it as I got to meet lots of new people and had no garden or house maintenance to worry about.
