Green Card And Physical Presence In The Us

HELLO EVERYBODY. it's 4am in the morning and i just joined this forum after reading posts for past 3 hours. i received my green card in april 2005, and i know that in order to keep it i have to spend in US up to 6 months. but is it 6 months from receiving a GC or in a calendar year? since i received it i was gone only for 5 weeks, but i am planning to go back to europe, do i have to wait another 5 months? i'd really appreciate any help. it's really hard to find actual answers on govt. websites! - - - thanx everybody! :scared:

you'd get more response in the visa section of the website...but it is a residence card for a reason...so any extended stays away, it might be worth looking into getting a re-entry permit if your going to be gone longer than 6 months, i know it's for stays over a year, but it's handy just in case.

hello cindy, thanx for your help. reading through it helped a bit, even though didn't fully answer my question. i was wondering if i have to be in US 6 months in a calendar year (from jan.-dec.) or is it from a date of receiving GC , which would be april 2005-april2006?

It can not be qualified in terms of time in/out only. There are other factors in maintaining your Permanent Resident status.

If you check your paper work before you went for your final finger prints, it has it all clearly stated there, about how long u can stay out of the country etc

If you need any more info then just ask, the paragraphs are way toooo long for me to type here (cant be bothered sorry), dinner time and all that
