Green Card lottery?

A question for anyone who has had any experience with the green card lottery. What is the likelyhood of getting one? Do they take personal situations into account when applying? When is the next application date? When do you find out if successful? How much does it cost? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Slim. Millions of people apply every year.

    > Do they take personal situations into account when applying?

No, it is completely random.

    > When is the next application date?

It is current right now and runs until November 6th.

    > When do you find out if successful?

Next year....around April-August. You are not notified if you don't win.

    > How much does it cost?

It is free. You don't have to pay anyone else to apply - just just right
down the appropriate details on a piece of paper and send it in.

The official website for the lottery is:

Looks like about 1% (~6,000,000/50,000). In our circle of people that we
assisted, 2 out of 225 won last year. But.... it is a lottery.

    >Do they take personal situations into account when applying?

No

    > When is the next application date?

Now through first week in November (must be delivered by noon 11/6)

Seems like April through September. One of our winners notification was
dated in early September. You don't find out if you don't win, only winners
are notified.

    > How much does it cost?

No cost to enter but various groups and firms offer some services to make
sure the right format and information is provided. See US State Department
web site if you wish to do it yourself.

Thanks so much for your quick reply Mel and Bob. I am not going to go that route as I am Canadian and that particular visa isnt open to Canadians.

I know about the TN visa but i dont believe my qualifications allow for this (I have a b.comm and am currently doing an MBA by distance education- my work experience is in pharmaceutical sales). Will i be accepted for a TN visa? My wife is a nurse and she is moving down with a TN visa - i wish to work also but dont know the best visa to get. Help on this topic would be very much appreciated...

But they choose a particular number of winners from each country... so I
wonder if there are statistics for each country? There must be some
variability in the number of entries that come from each country in relation
to the number of winners to be chosen. It would be interesting to see such
stats.
