A short drive to the Adirondack National park (where Pat Hasler and I live and can swear to its stunning scenery in ANY season) and the Catskill (south). Also handy for trips up to New England. Plenty of work too as its the state capitol. Winters are cold BUT nowhere near as bad as those places in the mountains or by the lakes.
We lived in Johnstown, Fulton County (just South of the Blue Line). The "leatherstocking region" and Mohawk valley have natural beauty beyond description (esp. in Sept-Oct), but most people there are colder than the January weather. It took us 3 years to meet the neighbours. We try to be outgoing and friendly and are open minded, but the upstate mentality is really provincial. OK if you want to disappear into the woods, though.

Now, Colonie, Clifton Park, Niskayuna, etc. They're quite nice.

I'm thinking somewhere that is accessible to major eastern cities such as NY, Philadelphia???, Washington DC for some culture, history and art galleries. Being a city boy I don't think I'd like to be too far out in the sticks and nowhere too hot like AZ, TX, NV.

Any ideas or recommendations, please give me your reasons why you would recommend it?
I recommend you move to Michigan. Best place ever.

The problem with areas surrounding DC is that housing is very, very expensive (for anything half decent and with a family that includes 2 kids, it'll be expensive, without a doubt) plus travel to and from work will be a bitch. Driving will be as bad if not worse than in CA and public transport will be like London.

My SIL just moved from Montgomery County, MD to another state because the cost of living was getting out of control and the schools weren't good enough (for her standards). I'm sure she made a tidy sum from the sale of her home.
