I plan on buying an unlocked iPhone before I leave. It is pricey but it gives me peace of mind to know that I'll have it upon landing. Not sure of what to do while at the airport without a phone though...

Easy, get your phone unlocked and get a free sim from GiffGaff.com. £10 per month= 250 free mins, unlimited texts, unlimited internet. Absolute no brainer. I'm emigrating to Canada on Sunday and am very sorry to be leaving such a great service behind!

Me & my wife have been on giffgaff for the last 18months and only had 1 day when connection problems were an issue. They use the 02 network. I highly recommend them compared to the rip off merchants, i.e. Vodafone,02,3 etc!

Wasn't O2 the network that had the big outage last month all over the country for a few days!!

Can I get that in the US before I leave or do I have to get that at the airport upon arrival?

ETA: I briefly visited the site. I does seem as if I can only purchase it in the UK but I could be wrong. Will take a closer look later, but thanks so much for the link :)

No problem. I think it might be UK only for the time being but as far as I know, they are looking at introducing an International service soon. The sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. Have a look at their forums, that should give you more of an idea of whether you can use it. Good luck.
