good vet in houston
 

Hi has anyone got any good vets they can recommed. I think I need a second opinion for my dog.

if you havent read the "my dog ate his tail" thread here is a quick update.

1.Dog had a cut on his (normal length tail).
2.stupid dog kept wagging it, so cut wouldn't heal, blood everywhere.
3.Vet recomended to dock him (agreed as this was 2nd time it happened and only going to get worse... happy dog, powerful tail)
4.Docking done, tail not healing, so kept bandage on.
5.Stupid hungry dog decided to EAT a bit of his tail.

So I am now on a program of hydrotherapy (a posh word for washing with a hosepipe) and some silver somthing cream. BUT it doesnt seem to be healing, and is getting a bit pussie.

I really would like to take him to another vet for a second opinion, but no idea where to go. I'm in the north in the woodlands, but not worried to travel.

Its about an hour north of you, but Texas A&M University (in College Station, just off Highway 6) is your best bet. They have world renown veterinarians. The advantage of going to A&M is your going to have the dog looked at by a specialist AND a group of students - the students will be asked their opinion etc, so your dog receives a little more attention than a normal 5 minute exam. I took my horse their and it was like a scene from the tv show E.R. - a room full of white coats all discussing your loved one.

Don't let the thought of students looking at your dog worry you - they are supervised. A&M is one of the hardest veterinary medicine schools to be accepted in to. Many people travel from all over the area to use the state of the art hospital there. (Mrs Pony just graduated from there, so I have 1st hand experience).

ooh that sounds great, do you have to book in? or just turn up?

I really want a second opinion, I didn't want to have his tail docked at all, but realised it was the best in the long run, and now, if he has to lose any more I would be devastated!

I second Pony's suggestion. I'm sure you will be more than satisfied with the attention and treatment your dog will have there.

I have just been looking at the website, and they say that small animal clinic is only for residents in a 50 mile radius.

Silly question but are dogs small or large animal (he's the size of a small horse!)
and if thats the case, should I just lie about my location?

I really want them to see him, I think any teaching hospital (animal or human) gives great treatment.

Small...large animals are horses (normal size) etc.

lot of dodgy vets out there however i can highly recommend this hospital esp DR Heidi Hottinger...the location you live in doesn't matter however I think you may have to be referred by your vet as in the UK in certain circumstances if you went to a private hospital. from The Woodlands, Gulf Coast is about 35 miles. good luck!
