Default Good hostel or hotel in NYC

Hubby and I are looking to spend a couple of weekends in NYC over the summer. We have friends there so will hopefully stay with them for one weekend, but would like to stay in a good hotel or hostel for the other weekend.

IDEALLY we would like to spend around $100 or less per night. I know the better places are far more per night, but we really are on a budget, and just want somewhere clean and basic...so long as it has a bed and DOES NOT have bed bugs, cockroaches or any kind of bug we would be happy. Also, again ideally, we would want to be in Manhattan itself.

Does anyone have any recommendations?

I have stayed at the Wellington a few times. It is about $150/160 a night so may be a bit more that you were hoping for. It was the hotel that Borat stripped off in a think!

It will depend on the nights you are booking, but I just checked with the Days Hotel on 94th and Broadway. If you were booking for an overnight from tomorrow to Thursday, you'd get a queen room for $105.47 with tax.

See what you can find...

That particular one goes from $99 to $119 a night right now.

Signing up for a Starwood Amex card (fee-free for the first year) gives you enough points for a free night at a couple of their Four Points-branded properties in Manhattan... Could use the wonga you save to go towards the other night (likely to be more than $100) so that it averages out ok but you get to stay in a nicer property and better location.
