and you cannot blame any major business for taking their business overseas if they can produce the same product for a fraction of the cost - makes you wonder what will happen to americas manufactoring industry over the next few years!!

No it is easy for US management workers to work in Mexico, say it myself. Trip over the to Mexico 10mins trip back 1 hour, why? All the US managers who live in El Paso, getting US wages. China is too far away, Mexico is where manufacturing will be, close the border.

give it time - who needs US managers, the locals will be doing the jobs too - further cost savings

The demise of the US Auto market was and is inevitable. As older "especially" Midwest Americans die off the customer base disappears. The younger Americans, wealthier children have no loyalty to junk US cars.

Yes - VW's are often made in mexico here - the jetta in particular

this possibly explains why they have cast iron reputation in the Uk but are relatively crap in the USA

Worth checking the VIN on the dealer's lot. First character '1' for USA, '2' for Canada, '3' for Mexico, 'J' for Japan, 'W' for Germany. Easier than trying to research where it came from. If you get a VW, make sure it's a W and not a 3.

As for GM, can't say I'm a big fan. Rented a Monte Carlo once - nice engine, but a heavy beast of a car. Doors almost broke my legs when I opened them on a hill. At work I have a 6 cyl Chevy S-10. Worst truck in the world. I can say with authority that my 4 cyl Civic is faster than that 6. WTF!!!

So GM cutting jobs was inevitable. They've also reverted to the employee discounts after saying they were giving them up. I don't think it'll be Mexico for long - China is on a path to put the whole world out of business.

I think the US auto industry is going through the same "bury our heads in the sand" as the British motorcycle industry did in the 60's and the British car manufacturers did in the 70's. The rest of the world moved on and built better and better products and all GM can do is sit there saying "well, this product is good enough".

People don't want "Good enough", they want to be spoiled as much as they can for the least amount of money. So when the Japs, Germans or who ever build a better vehicle for the same money with more reliability and more options, is it any wonder people think they build a shite product?

Incidentally, I read in a motoring magazine (UK and can't remember which one so can't quote) that Dodge/Chrysler are owned by Daimler/Chrysler owned by Daimler Benz = Mercedes Benz.

There was a big stink about Chrysler joining Daimler as it was sold as a "merger" to the workforce etc, but Daimler own over 51% so it was actually a take over.

Yep. I think even the best manufacturers still produce the odd few of those. Fortunately they are the exception rather than the rule - just consider yourself unlucky.

Had no problems with the RX300 - but just had the 90,000 mile service and that was expensive. And she's due for new discs and pads on the next service, which will also be expensive.

The difference seems to be that when Honda/Toyota/Nissan have a problem, they correct it.
Ford examples of why should we correct our problems? Mustangs/Pintos/Crown Vic's, cheaper to let people die in fires, pay out a few law suits, then recall them. US car makers are suffering from this attitude.
I had 2 brand new Jeeps (97 & 2001), both had problems that could be found on earlier models. They just plough on & refuse to make corrections.
