Default Girly sports?

OK, I gotta ask... why do yanks take the piss and say/think that football (soccer) is a girls sport? I don't think I have ever heard one say... 'oh yeah nice game'.

They have American football basically padded up rugby (right?) and Baseball aka rounders (not trying to sound sexest, don't flame me I am female too) but it is/was mostly played by girls only when I was at school... and they take the piss out of footie?

Not forgetting basketball which obviously started as netball.

I used to play (field) hockey at school and oh my god did those hockey sticks hurt when they collided with your shins. No shinpads for us girls only the boys playing football got to wear them. Not to mention the pain when the hockey ball hit you in the ribs or even worse the face.

Oh yeah. I went to an all-girls school for quite a few years (discovered the boys later though ), and we played field hockey and lacrosse, all without protective gear. We also played British Bulldog (I know, I know, I was young, what can I say), which seemed to involve full body tackles, on a tarmac playground. Girlies are pretty tough stuff, esp. when the boys aren't watching.

..... because football is the most popular world team sport, and if American football/basketball/baseball etc can't compete with world popularity, then American pride just can't take it. World series baseball ?????????

It's a common misconception that the World Series is named after the actual World.

I always understood that the series was named for it's original sponsor, The World newspaper, and the name stuck. However if you search Ask Jeeves you will find that this is claimed to be apocryphal.

Who knows.........?

Maybe football is considered a girly sport because of constant prima donna's rolling around on the floor as if there leg was just taken off below the shin. Then a minute later after the magic sponge/spray, they run off like nothing happened.

I went to one of these schools too - once got hit with a discus thrown by the school champion whilst i was playing hockey on the next field. Got a busted nose and black eyes but still had to finish the hockey match!

As I said on a previous thread alot of the soccer teams here are non contact. Could be why they think its girly cause they're not playing real soccer
