I'm on a $35 a month prepaid deal with Virgin Mobile (300mins, unlimited data & texts). It was the cheapest I could find. Coverage isn't great everywhere but a good deal if the coverage is ok in your area.

Make sure that Cricket covers everywhere where you want to be able to use your phone because Cricket network coverage is very patchy.

Cricket is now a 100% owned sub of AT&T Wireless and uses their entire network but w/o the roaming option onto other GSM networks. But one should always check coverage at your home etc. for any cell phone company you want to use.

Re: Getting a US phone contract?
I got my wife a sim on Cricket and it's been pretty good for $45 per month. She's either always on cricket or att.
Was a pretty easy setup - I just went to a mall and got a sim from one of their concessions. |

plus for an extra $15 get unlimited calls back to the UK
But yeah, US cell services are crazy expensive by comparison with the UK. On the plus side, we don't need to pay for a landline just to get internet like we had to back home. |

I'm now getting 10GB of (ATT) LTE data for $55 a month. Unbeatable. |
Re: Getting a US phone contract?
I have found the quality of Skype calls to the UK is superb.

Re: Getting a US phone contract?
I used to have a samsung on sprint. It cost more than $70 plus taxes and then canceled. Now i have a unlocked nexus android phone with tmobile prepaid $50 a month plan

Re: Getting a US phone contract?
I have an unlocked Moto G with 4G and on T-Mobile on the $50 per month plan. On that plan, if you hit the 1GB of data limit, you are simply cut back to 3G. Haven't had that happen, but I would not mind. T-Mob has a $45 per month plan which simply cuts you off if you hit 1GB.

Re: Getting a US phone contract?
I'd love to move to T-Mobile, their tariffs at the minute are superb. But as someone that needs reliable coverage, they just don't cut the mustard! Have just taken advantage of their free 7 day test drive. Their LTE speeds are way faster than Verizon. But their coverage where I am is just way too patchy! I saw earlier that someone said Verizon were overpriced. I agree and disagree. Sure, they offer less, especially in data, than just about everyone else, but their coverage, especially if you don't live in a big city like me, are far far superior. I hate only having 4GB (which I have to share with my wife) though!!!
