Getting married & live outside the US

Dear All,

I met up with my girlfriend, who is a US citizen, while I was at Uni in 1995 and have been seeing each other ever since. She is currently here in the UK studying for her Masters. As she is approaching the end of her studies, we are scrabbling to figure out what to do next.

One of the main questions we have is that, if we get married and live here in the UK for a while and decide to relocate to the States, what would be the channels we would have to go through?

As I am a UK Citizen, I pretty much know what to do from the UK side. But .. moving to the States after being married here, will entail many things that I am not familiar with. There is too much information on the Web but it is a bit much to digest. Would anyone share with us the procedure we will have to take?

Also, is it more of an advantage to get married outside the US or inside the US?

Any information related to this would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks in advance and kind regards,

Jerry

I commend the fact that as the UK citizen you were interested enough in the future legality of your future wife to find out what to do about making her living, working and enjoying marriage in the UK with you legal and above board.

As for the USC part of the couple, I would suggest that she reciprocates by reading the following URL:

http://www.ameriscot.com/i130

This site was set up by a USC/UK couple who have migrated in both directions over the years and is simply put and easy to understand.

Unfortunately there is more to know about the US processing and the timeline is longer to achieve the final goal but since neither of you are looking to move back to the States immediately, then a few months won't make a world of difference in your lives.

If, however, you are truly not planning on moving to this side of the world in the near future, bear in mind that the US Consulate, can at anytime, remove the ability to do DCF.

Good Luck
