One comment was in 2000 when the owner of the hotel had asked a couple of Brit friends what they thought of the election - they had said they vote Labour in the UK so it would be a vote for Gore, his response was "a vote for Gore is a vote for blacks and jews" said with a slightly maniacal squint. The second time was a senior manager at work who was based in the south, he had been having a hands-free cell conversation with one of his staff whilst driving him and I to a meeting, once the call finished and he hung up he said "N*iggers" and gave me the "what can you do with them" kind of look. I'm sure that there is plenty of racism across the rest of the US (and indeed UK) however most of the rest of the country at least knows that it is generally unacceptable to spout it and if they think it they keep it to themselves. |

You sound a bit paranoid when you say "We all know that you are referring to sountherners." Who's we? Is there more than one of you? that's probably why we are still partaking of this thread...... I am aware that this is not a term unique to the South and I have spent plenty of time in many other states, but I would bet that if you put a group of people in a room and played word association on the subject they would put the term redneck next to the southern states. It is apparently so well loved that it has crossed many borders......... |

Myself in the third person looked up redneck in many dictionary's and the general consensus is Redneck: "a poor white person in the southern united states" Used as a disparaging term for a member of the white rural laboring class especially in the southern states" Originated in the south, country people that worked hard all day in the fields hence the redneck. okay people I am putting it to bed now........... somehow I ended with a 4 page bitch fest all by myself :D |

Re: georgia
I dunno...have a southern sister-in-law, and lived in Texas for a while, and I really just can't handle the whole politeness thing or the s-l-o-w pace of life...and don't get me started on all the religious stuff either :)
Think my wife summed it up really well once - think we were in NC - that it just felt like we were trapped in Steel Magnolias - yuk, have to say for me rude, crude NYC and reserved but fast paced New England works better. |
Re: georgia
not really sure yet we are going out on an e2 ( hopefully ) and the business broker said we would get more for our money there, we were going to try to move to florida but it seems to be a lot more expensive.

I've only ever been to Savannah and I have to say I didn't really like it at all. I thought it was dirty and full of dodgy people. Most of the city looked like a dump to me and was quite run down in my opinion. Never went to Atlanta though. |

Well, you are both right- kind of. I live in AL and work in GA- 16 miles from my house. The AL/GA border (the Chattahoochee river) is only 2 miles from work. As to my expierence her-I do not see the racisim I expected to see when I came to the south, though it does exist in some corners or some people. Quite the opposite, I see old white men holding the door for, or chatting with black women/men, whites and blacks co-mingle at partys or gatherings (though it seems that the churches are still very segregated as I drive by them as sunday mass lets out). Hell, here it's probably 55-45% whites/blacks so you almost HAVE to get along. If you can put up with 95+ degrees every day with 95% humidity and not a wiff of a breeze for 4 months a year- in exchange for snow free 50-70 degree December-Feb days, it is the place for you. Springs are wonderful with all the azaleas, wisteria, honeysuckle, jasmine etc blooming all over. The majority of the people are very nice- red necks are around, but they don't rule. My biggest complaint are the drivers... in AL at least they are the worst I have ever seen. |
