what part of georgia are you thinking of moving to?

I went to Atlanta last week and it sucked eggs big time; it's dirty and far too many rednecks.

I've heard that other parts are nicer.

Any particular reason you chose Georgia?

I lived in Atlanta for 7 years, the Hubbys work took us there for the 1996 Olympics. The city was at that point beginning to experience major growth.
Atlanta has a diverse population, great downtown, decent arts scene, variety of restaurants pretty much every kind of ethnic food you could want.
Traffic is pretty rotten but thats true of any major city.
Marta public transport, great if you live within the station limits.
(outside of 285 the commuter belt, not so convenient as we found out)
Affordable property, horrific heat in the summer Hence the nickname "Hotlanta" there is no air movement in July and August! But hey there's AC right?
We left 4 years ago just at the point when the downtown area really took off, as in more lifestyle geared towards living downtown, new housing etc.... pedestrianised lifestyle and IKEA!

I'm sick of people saying that the south is full of rednecks.
I've been living in the south for 11 years, the people I have met here are some of the friendliest and most genuine people I have come across whilst in the States.
You will find stupidity and ignorance in every other city here in the US and wherever else you go in this world.

I did find the southerners to be the friendliest people generally in the US really miss that here in the NW as it is a bit more like britain re being friendly. If they were as open and friendly as the south here I would be perfectly happy :D now I am just mildly happy :)

Seriously, I love the southerners, it really is a whole experience unto itself, one of my dearest friends here has introduced to to some serious southern culture, you aint seen nothing till you experienced a day in the Church (her son's christening) where the organ player had a heart attack and the entire congregation chased the "Devil" out thru the church doors!
It was bloody brilliant, priceless experience, you have to admire the depths of how true and sincere the southern mentality can go :D

the funny thing was after the medics left, the ceremony went on just as if nothing had happened, no gossiping after or questioning what had just happened like it was just an everyday occurrence to chase evil from a building! :)

You're wasting your time if you can't read my location.... but still.

For the record I never said anything about "southerners"; I said I met too many "rednecks" in Atlanta; I've lived in NYC, Chicago and now Miami and never have I met so many ignorant people in one place.

Nope :p Just tired of the "south is full of rednecks" sterotypes. Trust me, I have seen them all over the place but the south is not just about rednecks. Southeners are deeper people than that and I saw that this May.

On Mothers Day, My wife , myself and her parents went to her granparents in the country. My in laws were sharing their house with their other daughter and her family. We got a phone call at 4pm saying there had been a housefire and we had to get back to Memphis very quickly. My sister in law and her two kids had been in the house and she had to bust the window and throw the children out. She was a large lady and so couldn't get out and was overcome with smoke. She was in a coma for 3 days until she was declared brain dead and the life support was withdrawn.

We burried her out in the country where my wifes family is from, a town which you could call "typically redneck". After the service, on the drive to the cemetary, not only did people pull over to the side as a sign of respect, a lot of them also got out of their cars and removed their hats to show respect, even those who were in the oversized pick up trucks.

My Father in law and mother in law lost most of their belongings in the fire. They are insured so they are not hurting financially. Even so, the local community and my mother in laws work have given them almost $4000 out of their own pockets. A lot of these people are on minimum wage too. They have also had neighbours help out and do stuff. One little old white haired lady insisted that she would help us move some of the stuff we did salvage and would not take no for an answer.

Southerners may be called "simple" but they have some of the biggest hearts I have seen and will take care of those who are in need.

When you use the term redneck we all know you are referring to southerners
nobody refers to people from the northeast or the west coast or the Midwest as "rednecks"
I'm not looking for a fisty cuff 4 page bitch fest thread, I'm saying don't judge a place by one visit or by the people you happened to interact with during your experience, what do you think when people sometimes judge you as a Brit that sits around drinking tea all day, are in love with the royals, wear bowler hats, carry umbrellas and talk about the weather all day, not to mention we all have bad teeth? i am not a fan of generalising which is how you came across

In that case you are assuming too much; I never call a southerner a redneck just because they are from the south, I'd call them it for being ignorant/stupid/inbred/etc...

Wow... as I gain composure, so sorry for your loss. THAT is the true south, I have seen the same thing here, hearts as big as mountains true, genuine, compassionate.
They really would give you the shirt off your back, the small towns especially, in one of which I now live. I was on my way to a meeting in downtown and made a few wrong turns. The local sheriff saw me driving in circles and pulled me over. He asked me if i was lost, which of course I was and proceeded to give me a police escort to the business I was trying to find!
I got out the car to thank him as we pulled up and he gave me a hug and said "my pleasure ma'am"
In regards to funerals it is the same here too, total respect.

Re: georgia

My experience of the South hasn't been great - I've only heard racism twice when in the US and both times it was in the south and said in such a way as though it was an accepted norm and perfectly OK to express it.

One comment was in 2000 when the owner of the hotel had asked a couple of Brit friends what they thought of the election - they had said they vote Labour in the UK so it would be a vote for Gore, his response was "a vote for Gore is a vote for blacks and jews" said with a slightly maniacal squint.

The second time was a senior manager at work who was based in the south, he had been having a hands-free cell conversation with one of his staff whilst driving him and I to a meeting, once the call finished and he hung up he said "N*iggers" and gave me the "what can you do with them" kind of look.

I'm sure that there is plenty of racism across the rest of the US (and indeed UK) however most of the rest of the country at least knows that it is generally unacceptable to spout it and if they think it they keep it to themselves.

I have heard racism here too but again it is everywhere. I used to work with a 2nd generation Indian girl at one IT company in the midlands. She had a very thick yorkshire accent. One summer she went to visit her sister in San Francisco. She said that several times she went to high class restaurants she was treated like dirt until she opened her mouth. Seems that most of the people there thought she was Mexican until they heard her speak.

Indeed. The rudest people in Florida are......not the rednecks, but the migrating New Yoikers!

Actually, contrary to the popular stereotype, I find the New Yoikers to generally be a good bunch. They often understand sarcasm, and therefore, I think, have more of a Brit sense of humour. Bit loud and screechy sometimes though.

Yep me too, in agreement you find it everywhere it is a shame that Cape blue had to experience that...... I have been on the receiving end myself of some unfortunate circumstances, I was once told at my bank in Nevada that i was a "foreigner" and could not access my account without my husband present, and not in a nice way she was a real cow to me, I felt like shit and asked for the manager and was "quickly" able to access my account.

Bugger got to go bakc to work :(
