what part of georgia are you thinking of moving to? |
Re: georgia
I went to Atlanta last week and it sucked eggs big time; it's dirty and far too many rednecks.
I've heard that other parts are nicer. |

Any particular reason you chose Georgia? |

Atlanta has a diverse population, great downtown, decent arts scene, variety of restaurants pretty much every kind of ethnic food you could want. Traffic is pretty rotten but thats true of any major city. Marta public transport, great if you live within the station limits. (outside of 285 the commuter belt, not so convenient as we found out) Affordable property, horrific heat in the summer Hence the nickname "Hotlanta" there is no air movement in July and August! But hey there's AC right? We left 4 years ago just at the point when the downtown area really took off, as in more lifestyle geared towards living downtown, new housing etc.... pedestrianised lifestyle and IKEA! |

I've heard that other parts are nicer. I've been living in the south for 11 years, the people I have met here are some of the friendliest and most genuine people I have come across whilst in the States. You will find stupidity and ignorance in every other city here in the US and wherever else you go in this world. |

Seriously, I love the southerners, it really is a whole experience unto itself, one of my dearest friends here has introduced to to some serious southern culture, you aint seen nothing till you experienced a day in the Church (her son's christening) where the organ player had a heart attack and the entire congregation chased the "Devil" out thru the church doors! It was bloody brilliant, priceless experience, you have to admire the depths of how true and sincere the southern mentality can go :D |

For the record I never said anything about "southerners"; I said I met too many "rednecks" in Atlanta; I've lived in NYC, Chicago and now Miami and never have I met so many ignorant people in one place. |

On Mothers Day, My wife , myself and her parents went to her granparents in the country. My in laws were sharing their house with their other daughter and her family. We got a phone call at 4pm saying there had been a housefire and we had to get back to Memphis very quickly. My sister in law and her two kids had been in the house and she had to bust the window and throw the children out. She was a large lady and so couldn't get out and was overcome with smoke. She was in a coma for 3 days until she was declared brain dead and the life support was withdrawn. We burried her out in the country where my wifes family is from, a town which you could call "typically redneck". After the service, on the drive to the cemetary, not only did people pull over to the side as a sign of respect, a lot of them also got out of their cars and removed their hats to show respect, even those who were in the oversized pick up trucks. My Father in law and mother in law lost most of their belongings in the fire. They are insured so they are not hurting financially. Even so, the local community and my mother in laws work have given them almost $4000 out of their own pockets. A lot of these people are on minimum wage too. They have also had neighbours help out and do stuff. One little old white haired lady insisted that she would help us move some of the stuff we did salvage and would not take no for an answer. Southerners may be called "simple" but they have some of the biggest hearts I have seen and will take care of those who are in need. |

A true Floridian is called a cracker ... but has nothing to do with their mental state ... |

They really would give you the shirt off your back, the small towns especially, in one of which I now live. I was on my way to a meeting in downtown and made a few wrong turns. The local sheriff saw me driving in circles and pulled me over. He asked me if i was lost, which of course I was and proceeded to give me a police escort to the business I was trying to find! I got out the car to thank him as we pulled up and he gave me a hug and said "my pleasure ma'am" In regards to funerals it is the same here too, total respect. |

Re: georgia
My experience of the South hasn't been great - I've only heard racism twice when in the US and both times it was in the south and said in such a way as though it was an accepted norm and perfectly OK to express it.
One comment was in 2000 when the owner of the hotel had asked a couple of Brit friends what they thought of the election - they had said they vote Labour in the UK so it would be a vote for Gore, his response was "a vote for Gore is a vote for blacks and jews" said with a slightly maniacal squint. The second time was a senior manager at work who was based in the south, he had been having a hands-free cell conversation with one of his staff whilst driving him and I to a meeting, once the call finished and he hung up he said "N*iggers" and gave me the "what can you do with them" kind of look. I'm sure that there is plenty of racism across the rest of the US (and indeed UK) however most of the rest of the country at least knows that it is generally unacceptable to spout it and if they think it they keep it to themselves. |

Actually, contrary to the popular stereotype, I find the New Yoikers to generally be a good bunch. They often understand sarcasm, and therefore, I think, have more of a Brit sense of humour. Bit loud and screechy sometimes though. |
