After a DV-based I-485 denial, the case goes into deportation proceedings at
the INS district office. It may take some time for the INS to start
deportation proceedings. It's probably a better idea to depart the U.S.
voluntarily before such proceedings begin.
I think it would be worthwhile for the person to sit down with an
immigration attorney, pay for his or her time, even if it is $200, and have
a detailed discussion of the options. It would be cheap at the price,
compared to the cost of dealing with INS after the trouble starts.
