FSA Advice
 

Hi all. I’m looking for advice on FSAs. My son had braces fitted late last year. I paid part of it up front and the rest was due before the end of the year but I only just paid it as they forgot to ask me for it at our appointment in Feb and then due to covid, today was our first appointment since. I didn’t realize I still had a substantial amount of money left in our 2019 FSA account as our dental plan covered some it. The deadline to file 2019 claims has been extended to mid June. Does anyone know if they’ll accept this as a 2019 expense even though it was paid in 2020 but covered services from 2019?
I don’t want to lose the money!!

It has been over 10 years since I retired but my company always had an FSA that I paid into. I'm sure that come December in some years my wife and I would use up any remaining funds having eye tests and such and not pay the bills until January. My company had a "grace period" in which to use up the funds in the FSA and I believe that was end of March the following year.

I would call and ask since it seems they have extended the dealine in your case.

Thanks. I had already seen that but I’m still not sure if I had to have paid it by March or if it just needs to be for services incurred before March.

The dental bill was for the entire process which you were paying off as you could. Since the bill is dated 2019, I don't see that claiming it before the expiration of the extended date would be problematic even if the payment date was in 2020. Include a copy of the original invoice from 2019 with your claim. Also ask your HR department for advice.

If the service was provided in 2019 and this is a 2019 account then yes, you can use this to pay for the service. You can also submit receipts from services already paid. You can call the FSA provider to see what’s covered.
