Default freight service from UK to USA?

Does anyone know of any reasonable compies who do this sort of thing? Also, what
taxes will I have to pay on my personal belongings?

We want to move our bed over (its expensive and HUGE) and dont want to replace it.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks! **L**

I used PSS
(http://www.pss.uk.com/index2.html)
and was quite happy with their service.

As for taxes on personal belongings, unless you have lots and lots of stuff unopened
in the original packaging the answer is nowt, nothing, zip or whatever other term you
want to use.

We used a freight forwarding company called Straight Freight http://www.straight-freight.co.uk/. They provided door
to door service which was brilliant since we lived at the top of a Victorian row
house in London (read: 8 flights of stairs -- 16 flights in U.S. standards!). The
lads who collected were helpful and friendly and this company is particularly good
if you have specialty freight and you need careful handling. Have cold bevvies
(soft drink/water) ready to aid their morale when carrying all of your stuff!

A couple of suggestions to make the moving easier is to have all of your boxed items
labeled (i.e. box 1 of 150, box 2 of 150) and have an itemized list of all contents.
You cargo is subject to inspections by
U.K. and U.S. customs so this list will be helpful in their eyes. Because of my neat
and organized itemized list they did not require any of the boxes opened at
either port. Make sure that you do not carry any agricultural goods as that may
detain your shipment in the U.S. (this includes green woods, plants, particular
seeds, etc.)--check the U.S. customs site at
http://www.customs.ustreas.gov/
(see info on importing/exporting).

Hope this is helpful--good luck on your move!
