anyone know how I can obtain a UK number here in the USA.

I have seen some sites but they are too expensive. anything like google voice in the UK would be great

Not free, but Swytch works well. You can port a UK number or obtain a new one for £5 + VAT = £6 per month.

You can sign up to Sipgate (www.sipgate.co.uk) which is free but you need a UK address to receive a code by mail to activate the account - plus you need to use a UK VPN when signing up or you'll be given an 05 number rather than a "normal" UK landline prefix.

Also, roaming in the US on a T-Mob PAYG SIM in a cheap dumb phone, texts are 8p each

I found moremins.com : its not free but $5 bux a yr for the first yr for a uk cell number and $11bux a yr there after... not bad

more info, its a virtual number tagged to your US cell phone. can make calls and receive sms. addons avaliable
