Free text message to UK mobiles (only via websites)

Is there one or more websites where I can send free text messages to UK mobiles?
I don't necessarily need a text message reply back to my US cell phone.

I don't want to do this via my US cell phone due to the cost and aggravation.

I read someone here recommend the twit thing but the people I need to contact are not on this thing and I have no idea how to use it either.

Can't you send these messages via e-mail? If you send me an e-mail to [email protected] it will arrive as text message on my phone, for example. I can't imagine you couldn't do the same with British cellphone operators.

Yes, I can use email to send the text message.
From which site would I do this?

So just replace the phone number you show above with the UK mobile number and use the same email domain as shown?

If so, would you know the correct syntax format for the UK mobile number?

Throw me a bone, mate. ;) Who's the provider, and I'll try and find out what the proper e-mail address would be.

Re: Free text message to UK mobiles (only via websites)

Kar, as far as I know TMobile is one of the only US providers to advertise doing that (email to text) and I never found any reference to being able to do it on a carrier in the UK. It doesn't sound like MrBenn knows the carrier of the UK number. It *might* be called One2One but the google results are inconclusive.

MrBenn, "Throw me a bone" in this case means something like "I am trying to help you but I need more information from you in order to assist." Who is your cell phone provider? The international cost might be less than you fear.

Re: Free text message to UK mobiles (only via websites)

Mr Benn, I googled "Text to UK Mobiles" and this was the first hit:

http://www.cbfsms.com/

I have never used this service and cannot comment on whether or not your message will actually reach its destination.

EDITED TO ADD - Read the terms carefully. Another site that came up on the google results charges the recipient 5 pounds to read the message!

None of them advertise it, as far as I know. But for Verizon Wireless, it's [email protected] for text messages and @vzwpix.com for multimedia messages; and @txt.att.net for at&t wireless.

Very interesting, I didn't know that!

Re: Free text message to UK mobiles (only via websites)

If you know who the folks in the UK are using as a phone carrier, you can google what the operator email to text is, so you can email their phone.

Sue, posted a smartphone app a few weeks back that let folks text people who had the app for free.

http://www.txt2day.com/ can do it through the web.

Screw typing out all those text messages on the tiny phone keyboard

Recipient of these texts can also reply normally, and they would show up in your e-mail.

I agree. Its abysmal. The keys made for cellphones seem sized for 2 year-olds, not adults.

I know how to send a paid text message to the UK, if I want to. But this is not the issue or the question.

(Please use my correct name. Thank you).

I can't figure out who the operator is for the 07 code you gave, "Ben" ;)

Time to experiment! Send a brief e-mail, ca 120 characters, counting spaces and punctuation to [email protected] and kindly report back :fingerscrossed:

Hi - what is your name? You have not told us, so I used part of your username, as is common.

Best of luck in your continued search.

Not necessarily (and I didn't).
Perhaps you are unaware that Google does not produce the same results for everyone.

Cricket cellphone plans include international text messaging for no additional costs and their plans are really cheap, only $55 for smartphones.

I'm on the $15/month plan from T-Mobile US, giving me unlimited messaging and 10c a minute for actual phone calls. For ten bucks more, I'd get:

unlimited calls to landlines in over 50 countries, unlimited texting to any mobile phone in over 200 countries, and unlimited texting and discounted calling to landlines and mobile phones in over 150 countries,

I can't justify such a large expense for my very limited needs so I have a Tracfone, which costs me $6.50 a month to keep any minutes, perpetually.

Hmmmm....such polite manners.

Don't have to thank me for answering your question in post 12...and you don't have to act the petulant sow after people pointed out how rude you were to other posters.

Honey, rather than vinegar as they say, but then again, who needs to help you in the future huh?

This has gotta be a wind up?

There's a Stephen at work who goes ape if you call him Steve - 'my name is Stephen not Steve' but for someone to say 'my name is Door4MrBenn not Mr Benn'. Quality!

Think I'll try this one on another board where I post as 'OutInTheSky'. The next time some idiot calls me 'Sky' I'm gonna give them some much deserved verbal.

BTW - interesting thread. Everything in the whole phone/txt/msg world is changing so fast and everyone seems to expect stuff for free nowadays - 'I can chat to my friend 8,000 miles away for free through our webcams on our gmail accounts so why should I pay for txts?'.

Re: Free text message to UK mobiles (only via websites)

Well, why SHOULD you pay for text messages? That's a service that doesn't cost the providers a penny. Every penny you pay for text messaging is pure, raw profit.

it can choke the network though, when there's billions being sent every minute...

Might be of interest to some - T-mobile are now offering a plan where you can call UK landlines for FREE! I think you have to have their international text plan, and this option will then cost you a further $5. I think it's pretty amazing. :D
