free health care for children?
do children under 18 get free health care? how does this work

They can if they are eligible for medicaid, but as said, you need to qualify based on low income or a parent being eligible. Children cannot be denied medical insurance but you will have to pay for it and even though pre-existing conditions will be covered, the insurance companies don't have to make it affordable.

Children cannot be denied medical insurance but you will have to pay for it and even though pre-existing conditions will be covered, the insurance companies don't have to make it affordable.
Basically it depends on the parents income.

Medicaid also covers children who have chronic disabilities or diseases, regardless of their parents' income. 
We have Medicaid coverage as secondary insurance for my son. He still has to have primary insurance through us, but all his deductibles, co-pays, and out-of-pocket expenses are taken care of by the state of Wisconsin.
As far as I know, children are not automatically given free health care, but if you qualify and fill out tons of paperwork, they may be. And thank God for the removal of pre-existing conditions... phew...

Not a lot is free, plus of course it is not quite free. Prescriptions and car parking fees come to mind.
The problem is that is seems to cost twice as much to deliver a unit of health care in the US, the US Gov spends more on heath care than the UK gov does pro rat'd but gets a lot less for it.
The cost is the problem.
