Default Free Credit Score

Not sure if this has been mentioned on here or not.

There is a site Credit Karma http://www.creditkarma.com/ that gives you a free credit score for nowt, rather than the bait and switch free but must cancel within 30 day jobbies.

As I understand it, it gives you your transunion score:

http://newsroom.transunion.com/index.php?s=43&item=500

Very easy to sign up and get a score. Obviously, it doesn't give you your scores from the 3 bureaus, but a useful benchmark I think and it costs nowt.

Seemed to be accurate enough for me, anyone else had a go?

That doesn't give you a score though (unless you pay). This doesn't give you a full report, but does give you a score. This seems a good site; had a lot of national press coverage too.

I joined www.freecreditreport.com last week and you get 10 days free and your credit score, I chose Experian as my report.

You can get your credit score without payment BUT make sure you print it out on the 1st attempt its a bugger to find it again after.

The site is safe, just google for reviews and there's loads, or look here http://www.creditkarma.com/about/press

anyway, I've only been in the US since last June, and apparently have a rating, according to this site, of 762. Seems good, too good in fact after such a short time? I've had a bank account since last December, and I used the Global transfer on Amex, but even so, it still seems high to me (not that I'm complaining).

You might well have a high score, but with little history behind it, it probably won't help out all that much on its own.

These are FAKO scores so they aren't going to match what your real (FICO) score is. Same goes for the scores from freecreditreport.com

They may be the same, but that doesn't mean either of them are FICO scores. The Credit Karma site uses TrueCredit to calculate your score based on your Transunion report. I guess by Experian site you mean FreeCreditReport which has their own way of calculating scores based on your Experian report. So the fact these match is a coincidence as they are based on different reports.

All these other sites have their own formulas for calculating your score, but the only real one is FICO which is calculated by Fair Isaac and can only be got by either applying for credit or by using myfico.com (provided by Fair Isaac).

There may be times when these match, but you can not rely on them as they could also be very different.

Credit scores vary greatly depending on which credit agencies were used, which credit model was used, and which credit score product was used. If you shop for a mortgage, for example, the lender may order a whole bunch of scores and toss out the top and bottom before looking at the results.

I am on this one http://www.experian.com I will try the other's but why do companys check your Experian,Equifax and Trans union every time and use those reports if they are not really worthy, my credit union use's Experian.

So really its not so important is it if everyone use's the above mentioned to check your credit why bother with Fair Isacc.

I will have a nose at the links thanks

Yeah that is the same as freecreditreport - also known as triple advantage.

For a mortgage they would probably pull all 3 - this would mean getting your FICO score based on all three companies reports. The score would be calculated by Fair Isaac based on these reports.

Getting a FAKO from somewhere else they would pull the same report, but the formula they use to calculate your score would be different - this could mean quite a large difference.

Are you sure? AnnualCreditReport.com should be the totally free service.

AnnualCreditReport.com provides consumers with the secure means to request and obtain a free credit report once every 12 months from each of the three nationwide consumer credit reporting companies in accordance with the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACT Act).

I mean, they (the Big 3) were forced by law to have to provide us this info, right...?

I think it provides a report, but not the score unless you pay.
