Food shopping - hints and tips?

Re: Food shopping - hints and tips?
Where I live there are dozens of Asian and Indian markets, selling the stuff they like. We British just complain about it. As far as bacon goes, I buy piece of pork and cure it myself. Very easy actually, check it out on google or YouTube.
If anyone comes to a different country, it's a little unrealistic to expect it to be just like the UK.

Re: Food shopping - hints and tips?
I spent a week in Majorca with my wife, we spent most of the time trying to find a relatively authentic Tapas bar, a very depressing time as we trudged past, English pub's, fish and chips, sunday dinner, English breakfast with Heinz beans, English beer, Eastenders, Coronation street, All premiership games live..........
We finally found somewhere that served Tapas, hurrah I shouted.
Then a family came in, full regalia of Newcastle shirts and asked the waiter if they had Newky Brown and Pukka pies!! (They did)
Oh my heart sinks when the Brits are abroad!

Re: Food shopping - hints and tips?
Hello, this may seem like a really dumb question, so I apologise now if it is, but does anyone have any advice for food shopping when it comes to fruits and veg as well as meat?
I landed in Florida two months ago and the three shopping trips I've taken so far have resulted in almost total mental breakdowns over why I can't seem to pick my own carrots and mushrooms (they seem to come pre-packaged), why fruits and veg seems to go bad so very quickly here and why everyone seems so freaked out about antibiotics in meats - I've never heard of such a thing back home and don't know if I'm just plain ignorant or if it isn't a problem in the UK?
Can someone give me some advice on if I'm just shopping in the wrong place (Publix) or any tips on buying food (or what not to buy?) over here so I don't break down and cry in the store?
Thanks in advance!

There was a program on UK TV on how the British Supermakets like Morrisons force the farmers to throw away veggies don't meet their produce standards purely based on appearance, causing literally tons of perfectly good food to be thrown away.

Do you have a Farmers Market in your area? Here in the San Francisco Bay Area there are Farmers Markets all over the place. Expect to pay more, but higher quality comes at a price.

Farmers markets work for us, yes they cost more, but and the real but is that you don't end up dumping the so called 'fresh' produce from grocery stores that goes off after a nano second.
There are always great food trucks at the farmers markets as well, oh bring me a brisket sandwich!

They're definitely good, but they're not always practical or affordable when you've got kids who eat like a train or need to shop late.

Some of the stuff I read hear makes me feel like I must be living in a different country. I guess a lot depends on where you live within the US. Living in such a diverse area like San Francisco Bay Area, as well as the tradition supermarkets we have some great independent markets.

You surely can't try to compare Brits on holiday for a couple of weeks and refusing to even attempt to experience another culture, to someone who's had to move away from everything they've ever known and is struggling with stress, homesickness and culture shock?
