Default Flying dog to usa

Hi folks
My son is bringing my dog ( a lil Jack Russell) over at the end of October,
the airline wouldnt take him when i flew out in May due to high
temperatures.
Hes having his rabies jab and his 'fit to fly' check within the next few
days (American Airlines say a week before is ok) but i'm still nervous as
hell about him arriving safe and well.
Has anyone else had experience of bringing pets to the US ? and if so how
did it all go ?

My son is flying London to Chicago .. then has to pick the dog up from
luggage collection and then hold onto him until he boards the Chicago to
Detroit flight ( a 3 hour wait) this is the part i'm worried about as it
seems a long time after a 7 hour flight to keep the dog caged.
