Default Flying with 6 week old

What ID does a 6 week old need to fly within the US, say MI to FL or MI to HI?

Children under the age of 16 (or it may be 14) do not need to show any ID.

While that's true, it doesn't stop some airlines (or overly-zealous airline employees) from demanding a birth certificate as proof of age (even if the child is obviously under the age where payment would be required to fly).

Here's an example from Southwest's website, stating that infants require a birth certificate.

Assuming you are flying with the child on your lap rather than separately ticketed. Make sure you have told the airline when you booked, then when you check in at the desk they will then issue a boarding card with the child's name on that is sufficient ID for the child to get through security and board (it isn't a boarding pass but looks the same) you won't be able to print it out online with your boarding passes. The check in desk will probably want to see a copy of the birth certificate though this is more to do with checking the child is under 2 years old.
