thats partly what's flummoxing me

before they came over here we all had dinner together in nashville and they gave me the

'what do brits think of dubya - they think hes great right?'

they were shocked when I told him that pretty much everyone outside the USA thinks hes a fool

I think they dismissed me as a communist or something at that time.

they've now been in the UK for 9 months and it seems that there attitudes towards politics have not changed at all, with the most worrying thing being that they now think EVERYONE around them is a crackpot like me

whats ironic, even in the 'red' states there has begun a bit of a backlash with dubya losing support, but they have not been around in the US to pick this up. not that they probably would...

one interesting comment was that apparently people's teeth over here are much better than in the USA....

They are living in the UK. Or did you mean after living there for a year?

2. They think the UK is anti-american
3. They think Bill C was the biggest piece of crap.
4. Didn't know the IRA were terrorists
5. Think the crap US economy is purely Bill C's fauly
6. Think GWB will learn from tony B to be a great orator
7. CNN = clinton news network and fox news is the only one to watch

these people are financially successful, both with degrees

my only comment is to say that to #6 you can't make a silk purse......

I'm still in shock and the wine has not lessened it at all
And there be one of the reasons I think I want to go home, the people here are so ignorant! Was driving behind a car the other day when I noticed the bumper sticker "England get out of Ireland", it makes me mad.

There doesn't seem to be anything in the schools syllabus that covers Irish history/politics over here. I also had a shock a while back when someone I considered very well educated and had gone to university made a comment about the IRA being protestants

Now you know why this Yank feels much more comfortable hanging out with Brits.

Look -- it's a sales job. Rich, well-connected people have a lot of money to spend convincing people that the Republicans are great and the Democrats are a bunch of lying perverts. If you want or *need* to get on well with them, at church, in business connections, in a small town.... you suck it up and you start to believe the lies you're telling yourself, cos after all, such successful wealthy people *must* know how to do things right. You *assimilate* -- isn't that the American way?

Bush is losing conservative support because he is not being conservative enough. It has nothing to do with taking a left turn.

Isn't not "being conservative enough" taking more of a left turn than his supporters would like?

The left turn comment was for his supporters, not Bush.

Well to be fair. How many of us learned any South American history, etc, for our history O's? I know that I didn't!! (bloody (grin) French Revolution that particular year..)

The only time I even gave a thought to the IRA, was when hubby had to go through London a few years ago when they'd set off a bomb or two (early 90's) and I was hoping he'd be okay (not that we were scared or anything, we were getting bombed ourselves at the time, just part of life).
