But you will be developing a credit score the moment you send them your SSN, AND even having a credit scoring record is useful - in other words, there is nothing worse than having some sort of check run against you e.g. for utilities, and having no record for you at all.

Hello,
We moved to NJ 18 months ago. We looked in the general area you mentioned, some of the lovely commuter towns to consider are Summit, Milburn, Short Hills, Chatham, Madison. All have nice walkable down towns, lots of restaurants, community activities however they are very expensive. You will definitely find rentals within your budget but they are more likely to be smaller historical homes opposed to the Home Alone style houses!! Definitely look at these towns thou as they are fantastic. Additional towns to look at are Berkeley Heights, New Providence which are slightly more reasonable and in a similar area for commuting.
Other areas that you can look at that you can commute from but you would more likely drive to newark or jersey city and get the ferry or the path (subway) are Basking Ridge, Bernardsville, Somerville, these have nice little walkable downtowns and lovely communities. Basking Ridge and Bernardsville both have train stations but no where near as regular services as Summit etc but very nice and more affordable. Bridgewater and Far Hills are nice areas too.
NJ works well if you are working in the financial district.
NJ has very high taxes but one of the big taxes are property taxes but these are included within your rent, which is one of the reasons it is so high.
Please be aware that when renting houses, the tenant generally pays the realtor fees (usually a months rent), opposed to the landlord, which an expensive eye opener when we moved over.
We used International Autosource for our cars and they were great, service was very good and they got us a good deal on the cars (although we did negotiate). They get the best deals on Fords but can source lots of other manufacturers. You can go to Ford, Volkswagen and Mazda directly as they do expat deals. We leased our cars and so far happy that we did.
We had a U.K. Amex and they happily transfer you over onto a US card which was very helpful.
Shout if you need anything else.

So did you make a choice? We are just about to head back to the UK after 2 years living in Summit New Jersey. Would have loved to stay longer but another job opportunity came our way. The life of an expat! I can’t recommend it highly enough. Great places for kids and grown ups too.

Looking for any great tips or advice please. Have had a good look through the forum and there is some great stuff here!!
Main topics I would like to know more about.

Taxation - best to go non Dom, what about my wife etc (plan is circa 3/5 years in US, maybe more)? Will be transferring my employment from existing UK business to our newly set up US one.

National Insurance payments in UK. Keep them up? If so then how?

We plan to travel on L1 visa (plus spouse). Any advice?

Things to get in new package agreement - relocation package costs (are they taxable?). Flights back home, car allowance?

Plan is to live around 40 mins commute via trains in nice friendly suburbs with house and garden etc. Budget around $4 to $5k rent per month. Any recommendations (we are looking around Montclair / Maplewood / South Orange at the moment).

Getting a car when we move? Expatride was one recommendation. Any tips? Unlikely to have a limp
fo money but will have money to rent / lease etc.

As you can see. Any advice or tips greatly received. (Ps sorry for the long ramble)
