Default First Mininum Wage Increase Effective July 24th

Nearly ten years after the last Federal minimum wage increase....

The deadline has arrived for most U.S. employers to post the new Federal minimum wage increases that were recently signed into law by President George W. Bush. All workplaces subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act's minimum wage provisions are required by law to display the new rates in a conspicuous location beginning tomorrow, July 24, 2007 — the date of the first of three incremental increases in the Federal wage standard.

The U.S. Department of Labor has created a poster that explains the new minimum wage law to employees. Copies of the poster are available HERE and can be downloaded directly from the Labor Department’s website.

The new rate of $7.25 per hour will be phased in over 26 months according to the following timetable:

First increase - $5.85 per hour, effective on July 24, 2007

Second increase - $6.55 per hour, one year after the first increase (July 24, 2008)

Third increase - $7.25 per hour, two years after the first increase (July 24, 2009)

Meanwhile in the UK this is the deal-
The main rate for workers aged 22 and over increased on 1 October 2006 to £5.35 an hour from £5.05 an hour.

How do you feel about the US increase in Federal minimum wage? Will it affect you? Do you think the Dollar menu at McDonalds will increase or the burgers get smaller?

Doesn't mean much here. Santa Fe is already at $9.50, and due to go to $10.50 on Jan 1.

my lowest cost contract employee is my painter - at $12 bucks an hour it won't really affect me much...

I'm sure a few of my tenants are min wage so it should be good for them...

Won't affect me....it's also a couple bucks under MA minimum....but it's a load of shite compared to cost of living anyway...and being minimum, it's funny has the racial divide to put to play, because it makes a difference of a couple bucks an hour where the missus works part time.

I feel really sorry for those that have to work on it and also raise families and the likes. If I was American it would make my blood boil.

Employers pay what the market demands, so in many cases hourly employees earn much more than the minimum wage. With a low minimum wage, more hourly employees work albeit for less money. With a higher minimum wage, fewer hourly employees work, though for more money. How you feel about it depends on which of the two scenarios you feel is better.

I would be very curious to learn exactly how many people actually do earn the Minimum Wage. I know here the McDonalds etc advertise $8.50/9.00 starting wage.

People here in northern Idaho drive over to Spokane Washington work as their minimum wage is one of the highest ours is one of the lowest and it seems a lot of people must have two jobs to survive,,,,,,,,,,,,,,It stinks.

The minimum wage in USA is plain crap. $7.25 will help many poor people halfway out of poverty, but its vacation time in the US thats so poor. I worked 51 weeks last year with no vacation time. Its ridiculous. Its so far behind Europe in worker benefits, i'm seriously thinking of moving back to UK permanently.:curse:

I was offered a plumbing job in Houston @ $ 15 an hour and THEY said it was a good wage. Well, US folks, I made 22 pounds an hour back in England ($ 44 an hour)

Vacation time in Canada isn't much better, I get 10 days a year. I got 4 weeks in the US, so I guess I am worse off in Canada. I never take the time off though, rather work.
