Finding a job - age discrimination.

I am halfway through the K1 process and hope
to be relocating to CT in early September.
The main worry I have concerns finding suitable
employment.
I am probably one of the older members on these
boards at the ripe old age of 52 and have over 30
years experience in the printing industry. If I had
to look for a new job in the UK now it would be quite
daunting, is it likely to be any different in the USA?
Regards
Mike

In theory you should have less of a problem as age discrimination is not allowed. However the bigger problem for expats is that a US employer can't readily "translate" your qualifications, nor are they likely to give as much weight to your non-US experience.

Make sure that you get you resume (cv) Americanized - the format for a US resume is quite different from a British CV.

There is federal legislation to protect those who would face discrimination by age, race, gender and some other factors. However, in practice though you may suspect you're being overlooked due to your age, it would be up to you to prove discrimination.

With the job market as tight as it is, selecting employees is even more rigorous than ever so preparing yourself with a US resume that raises no flags about your age is the best bet. Of course, you shouldn't omit dates when you worked at previous employers...

I wish you luck,

NC Penguin
