I went back to school 3 years ago. I was an SEN in the UK but just took everything over... I graduated in May.

I work 11 - 7 in the Emergency Department.

You should check into taking the boards... call a local Nursing School and speak to someone.

Some hospitals here offer a 10.000 sign on bonus.

congrats going back to school I just couldn't my studying days are over (it just seems so different here re nursing and the terminology is different).
also congrats in your recent graduation
If that's 11pm - 7am sure is interesting cases usually but very hard on you physically.

The usual drunks and hookers roll in around 2am... then there's the bar fight guys that had "I can fight anyone becauae I"m drunk and have super powers." syndrome.

There is a heavy police presence and we actually have jail cell. This is monitored with a camera... If we could show them what they looked like on a better day they would litterally want to curl up and I die. Or at least I would.

What amazes me is the number of pregnant teens that come in with their mothers expecting to find appendicitis. A new Ultrasound we have has colour depicting bleeding areas etc... one person asked me if they were goldfish!

The terminology isn't that hard to get a grasp of, just think of it as newer info. You'll soon replace Osteo with Ortho etc... You would have to take an inservice on equipment like IV pumps etc because they change all the time anyway... Pre-packaged Heparin flushes etc make it a lot easier too.

You will undoubtedly find British Nurses too. There are four that I know of in our Med Ctr. As an RGN you'll be hired before you know it.

My local hospital has at least 2 jail cells...it was strange to see two armed cops standing outside the cell door in the ER.

Don't know what we'd do without either of them...

Restraints laws have changed a lot too. You can't just sedate someone any more.

I hate that FGM was ever called "circumcision". *puke* It's FGM - Female Genital Mutilation. I hope that "father" gets all that's coming to him. I couldn't honestly imagine doing that to a 2-year old little girl. *cry*

that stinks!! At the psych ward you couldn't be without it. but I've never worked ER. But emergency surgery is interesting in the night shift weekend. The no of zygomatic fractures you can have in one night is quite amazing!
It's not just the terminology it's 'sue' city here and I have been out of it for over 7 yrs now (I even had to stop and think of the name of the broken cheekbone )

Or is your lecturer very PC
While the lecturer was trying to be PC (she couldn't get it into her head that some people do actually seek to do things to their bits - like piercings and labia-plasty (big in the porn world apparantly) ), she was adament that people who call themselves Christians also do FGM/female circumcision.

I would imagine that this is because FGM is not a religious thing, it's cultural, and most religions can be found anywhere......so the people having it done are firstly villagers from wherever and then secondly follow (insert chosen religion here).

The lecturer was explaining that some muslim clerics say that it's in the Koran, but that it is not actually written there, that it seems to be some peoples interpretation. Apparantly the Koran specifies something like "thou shalt not alter what allah has given you", which obviously goes against FGM.

It truely is sad that little ones are being put thru this practice

Odd/ironic how that quote is in the Koran about not altering what 'Allah has given you' and all the males are circumcised........

As a mother of 4 daughters I cannot imagine ever seeking to do this to your child, makes me want to cry

I would agree with that...what kind of mother would do that.
But, what choice do they have? If they don't do it, her daughters will never be able to find a husband, thus they'll be outcasts and destined to die...
It's a hard hard choice...or rather, it's no choice. These women just try to make the best of a bad situation.
