Post Female circumcision trial may be first in U.S.

http://www.cnn.com/2006/LAW/10/27/fe....ap/index.html

The trial of an Atlanta-area father accused of circumcising his 2-year-old daughter with scissors is focusing attention on an ancient African practice that experts say is slowly becoming more common in the U.S. as immigrant communities grow.

Khalid Adem, a 31-year-old immigrant from Ethiopia, is charged with aggravated battery and cruelty to children.

Human rights observers said they believe this is the first criminal case in the U.S. involving the 5,000-year-old practice.

Prosecutors say Adem used scissors to remove his daughter's clitoris in their apartment in 2001. The child's mother said she did not discover it until more than a year later.

This is barbaric, especially using scissors. The girl will never enjoy a fulfilling sex life now.

Angry Re: Female circumcision trial may be first in U.S.

I get the impression that it seems to be of little or no interest to many (not all) muslim males whether or not women will have a 'fulfilling' sex life.....the purpose of women being mainly to produce sons and to clean and cook for their husbands. Of course they can also have up to four wives as well.

I'm still smarting over the comments from the prominent Egyptian born muslim cleric in Sydney, Australia whom in his recent speech (in the largest mosque in Oz) for Ramadan has likened unveiled women to 'meat': he said that you wouldn't put out a plate of uncovered meat in the open air without cats coming to eat it, and that women should be in their rooms, in their homes and veiled in order that they won't get raped..... There had been a spate of Lebanese muslim males gang-raping native Aussie women in Sydney, leading to race riots.

Here is a transcript of Sheikh al-Hilali's speech and it is truly horrifying to see the hatred of this influential cleric in his attitude towards women - especially we non-Islamic infidels....

....it's a bit rambling but do scroll down the speech and read on from where he says...."On the issue of stealing, where the man is responsible for..."

The following discourse is interesting too:

Female genital cutting is today mainly practiced in African countries. It is common in a band that stretches from Senegal in West Africa to Somalia on the East coast, as well as from Egypt in the north to Tanzania in the south. In these regions, it is estimated that more than 95% of all women have undergone this procedure. It is also practiced by some groups in the Arabian peninsula, especially among a minority (20%) in Yemen. The majority of Muslim countries (except in parts of sub-Saharan Africa) do not practice it

Although it is practiced by African Muslims, it is also known to exist throughout the Middle East though it is veiled in secrecy, unlike in parts of Africa, where it is practiced relatively openly. The practice occurs particularly in N Saudi Arabia, Southern Jordan, Iraq, western Iran, southern Turkey, Syria, some places in Oman

The practice can also be found among a few ethnic groups in South Amercia, India, and in Indonesia and Malaysia is fairly common among the country's Muslim women; however, in contrast to Africa, almost all are Type I or Type IV (involving a symbolic prick to release blood) procedures.

The practice is particularly common in somalia, Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia and Mali Among ethnic Somali women, infibulation is traditionally almost universal. In the Arab peninsula, sunna circumcision is usually performed, especially among Arabs (ethnic groups of African descent are more likely to prefer infibulation).

Amenesty International estimates that over 130 million women worldwide have been affected by these procedures, with over 2 million being performed every year.

Amnesty International asserts that
"FGC predates Islam and is not practised by the majority of Muslims, but has acquired a religious dimension."

A few others, like the Egyptian Sheikh Jad Al-Hâqq 'Ali Jad Al-Hâqq issued, in 1994, a fatwa stating:
"Circumcision is mandatory for men and for women. If the people of any village decide to abandon it, the [village] must fight against them as if they had abandoned the call to prayer."

Al-Azhar University has issued fatwas in 1949, 1951 and 1981 which endorsed the practice. However, in March 2005, Dr Ahmend Talib, Dean of the Faculty of Sharia, Al Azhar University, Cairo, said:
"All practices of female circumcision and mutilation are crimes and have no relationship with Islam. Whether it involves the removal of the skin or the cutting of the flesh of the female genital organs...it is not an obligation in Islam."

In September 1998, both Christian and Muslim leaders publicly denounced the practice

Both stories are horrific. As someone that grew up in darkest Africa, the circumcision thing on little girls is not news unfortunately. So unbelieveably barbaric. That muslim jimbo in Oz needs to be tossed on a plane and ship back to his homeland. Perhaps a little African circumcision will help control his urge to chase meat.

Very interesting.

We had our "genital mutulation" lecture today, by an expert who used to run an african well-woman clinic at the Whittington Hospital in London.

Summary:

Many African cultures circumcise females. Depending on the tribe/culture, it could be anywhere from newborn to 11/12/13 ish.

It is practiced by athiests, Christians, Jews, Muslims, cant remember who else but ie everyone. It is physically done by an old woman (who may have arthritic hands and be half-blind), with one or two exceptions.

Some African countries have regions where more than 90% of females are "done".

It is practiced for many, many reasons. The most "important" is "my granny had it, her granny and her granny. You - my child - had it, and so will your children and theirs". "They will no longer be part of this village/society etc if they do not get it done" Therefore, no access to husband/property/home/food etc. And even if a parent/mother protects her child from this practice, her potential mother-in-law will check her out and she'll either be done - and therefore get a hubby and therefore a home, or she wont be and therefore get nothing.

The WHO has classifications depending on "what" is removed.

If the clitoris is removed there is a very strong chance that the girl will bleed to death...if girl bleeds, then family/others wont come back. So, alternative is to "bury" the clitoris.

Basically, the girl is sewn up with a small hole remaining through which urine and menstrual fluid can escape. This hole is usually about one finger wide. The scar is often opened up once the girl is about to be married. If it has not already been done and a woman gets pregnant (bit technical - she can do without penetration), in the UK the scar is opened up when she is at least 20 weeks pregnant. (No reason for this timing other than to reduce complaints if she miscarries even tho the procedure wouldnt induce a miscarriage.)

It is technical illegal in the UK, so a woman cant be sewn back up after birth. Tho I actually reckon that if a woman went to court over this requesting that as an adult it's her body, then it'd be difficult for the court to refuse. Not saying that I agree, just that adults can legally choose to harm themselves in other means ans its not a crime.

The issue in the above case - like elsewhere is that the procedure is done ina minor who cannot consent.

Wake up!!! Sorry for the long post.

I wrote a paper on this subject and it was more and more disturbing the more research I did.

When a woman is stoned to death she is buried up to her kneck, but a men are only buried to his waste. If they escape they are sometimes are allowed to live... obviously she rarely does.
