I went to a lunchtime leaving do at work the other day, and they had 'cider'. Well, actually they had sparkling apple juice that claimed to be cider on the label. I almost spat it onto the floor!

One word answer to your question: Prohibition.

I think that's the main reason why the US has odd laws about drinking and alcholic bevvies.
