Re: Family selling everything they own on ebay
We've been looking at houses lately. Just browsing around on the internet really, not ready for anything serious yet. Still, it's an experience that does a great job illustrating the difference between what is most important to her and what is important to me in a property. Found a place on 4 acres with a great shop, 30ftx50ft, concrete floor and everything but she didn't like the floorplan of the house.
Good luck with the search.

Wow. Up to $125,000 at the moment (almost double from when I looked earlier). I could never take the kids' stuff though; morally wrong for me with such young kids. Loads of tools but I would never know which was a left handed screwdriver anyway .
Good luck to them though.

I'm guessing the kids have already pulled out their treasures, and perhaps mum and dad have offered to buy the rest of the stuff off them for cash!
It said there are seven people living in the house but I can't figure out who the seventh is. Mum, dad, two kids, (two) inlaws and...? Are there three inlaws there?

I thought selling the tools was pretty drastic as well, I think he'll end up regretting that. I doubt he'll make enough on the sale of everything to replace them. I guess he's planning on not needing them anymore. On the other site (where he posted the link to the auction) he said that they are keeping one pickup truck to use for the move and transport to their new location. He's hoping not to have enough stuff left after the sale to fill the bed.

The reserve is around $270k which is probably quite a lot more than what the house would sell for on its own.
It doesn't make sense to bundle items like house and cars together - if he wants to sell the cars, it would usually make more sense to sell them to someone who actually wants a car.
As for tools, as others have said it would be smarter to keep them and ship them to new home. Same goes for house furnishings - most house buyers will have furnishings of their own, it would be better to keep and ship rather than plan to replace.

Sounds like it didn't work...

Just wondering how you know this? I guessed it would be somewhere between $200k-$250k, might be way off though.
Actually I think he should have put a longer listing time on it. Yes, it generated media interest but a week isn't enough for it to trickle through to the less obscure outlets, or less obvious places like here, where he could have picked up some more bids.

He mentions the reserve in his associated website - I think it might also have been mentioned in one of the answers to questions raised on the original listing.

From my experience it's bad enough sorting through your own stuff when getting ready to move without going through somebody else's things when you get there. Maybe he should just auction the house itself on ebay and then have a local auction for the contents.

Look what happened to this Ex-Pat, apparently as a result of selling stuff on-line, intending to move back to Blighty.
Jim.
