Question Failed Medical Exam

How can you fail a medical exam? What do they test for?
Do they test for drugs?

They might test for that but mostly its to make sure the person does not have something like aids/hiv or active TB I think. The med exam is to make sure the person won't be a public health hazard. Try looking here:

There's lots of good info!

Claudia,
In general most STDs, drug abuse, TB, and mental illness are grounds for
failure. Check out this link for full info:

Since testing for drug useage is a worrier for you, a piece of advice is to have your husband stop using now. Remember if he continues to use in the US and is caught, he can be deported. Not worth the risk if the drug useage is only recreational and if he is a habital user, then perhaps you might want to rethink the marriage thing.

You mean they will fail you on your medical for any STD? I find that hard to believe considering there are some out there that affect up to 25% of the North American population.

Anyone have some info on this?

Hi:

There is a fairly recent court case involving exclusion for illegal drug use -- the illegal drug use was discovered in the medical exam by the oldest diagnostic tool in a physicians box -- he took a medical history.

An interesting case to say the least.

BTW -- you should know the results of the medical for one simple reason -- it mostly tests for things in relation to public health -- and medical ethics frowns upon a patient not being told that they have TB, AIDS, Syphylis and such other things.

So do they pull your whole medical history as well as the medical exam you take at the time of the visa?

Can they check for STD's with a blood test though? I know from my exam that
they didn't check "down there" and I was totally expecting them too. So
unless they can detect all that from just blood, they didn't check on me.

The only STD they checked for in Athens was Syphilis. Also tested for HIV, which is not exlusively an STD.

Susie,
The doctor "...took a medical history". The applicant told the doc about the
drug use.

I failed mine initially because of a greater than normal tremor. I had to
undergo neurological tests which determined that my condition was neither
degenerative, fatal nor a precursor condition to something more serious.
Once that determination was made my visa was issued. I think they're trying
to weed out those who will become a burden on the medical system.
