Re: Failed California Driving Test - Very Confused
Yeah, one of the things they say in the handbook is that you can be booked for speeding doing 40mph in a 45mph area if the cop believes that 40mph was too fast for that particular area on that particular day.
School zones really confuse me. The signs clearly say "when children present" but the interpretation is, it seems, entirely up to the police on the day. Some interpret it as in effect from 7am to 4pm schooldays even without kids present, others only when children present no matter what time of day or night or even non school days. It's so vague! Obviously if there are kids on a schoolday then that's a no-brainer. It's all the other cases.
I do mostly feel relatively safe here as everybody assumes everybody else is stupid, so looking around really does help - not just for the test! Once you assume people drive in any lane at any speed on the interstates, you always assume that you'll get overtaken on either side. I've driven in the Philippines recently and a couple of years ago and it's the same - low speed but because everybody looks out for everybody else, there are actually very few crashes despite the chaos, 4 lanes of traffic in three marked lanes, etc. The precision is remarkable too when squeezing through gaps.

The school-zone round here is in effect virtual 24/7, because when the school is not open, kids use it as de-facto playground (which is great - my son LOVES it....)
But, I've seen police out on a Saturday morning booking people for 30 in the "school zone" which is usually marked 35. I think it depends on whether the City bank balance is looking a little low.
The school bus annoys the hell out of me - a) why do you need it when EVERYONE at this school is (maximum) 15 minutes walk away due to the zoning and b) why does the entire world need to stop to let kids across.
I am seriously concerned about my son now - he seems to assume that ALL cars will stop at all corners if he so much as puts a foot out. And of course, they do, because every junction is a pedestrian crossing....
He is in for a shock back in the UK where pedestrians are really something to aim for.

Kudos to the OP for admitting such a thing on a Public Board.

It meant that some of those kids have a 50 bus ride to school.
Which is really bad as school starts at 7am out there....which is brutal during winter. It's to do with hunting apparently though, but it is out in the sticks.

That's really good going! Out where MIL teaches, a couple of the schools had to consolidate partly because one school only had 28 pupils.
It meant that some of those kids have a 50 bus ride to school.

The evidence in this forum suggests you are wrong. You're reading a single thread about failing! Of course there are going to be lots of stories about failing. Read the first line of the first post of this thread to see how the OP acknowledges it's unusual to fail.

OK. But why kudos for admitting it? What's the OP got to be ashamed of?
