extension of I94 (B1 visa)

extension of I94 (B1 visa)
I came to USA on a B1 visa valid for 6 months. I got an I94 valid for 3 months.
I was informed by my employer that it has filed an I-539 on my behalf. The application was filed before the expiry of my I94.
Even after one month of the said filed date, I haven't received any acknowledgement/receipt # for it.
I have been told that BCIS (INS) issues a Work Authorization Code (WAC number) on receipt of I-539. Is it true?
Can the WAC number be used to check the status of my application?
If the INS doesn't issue a WAC, what else can be used as a proof for the receipt of my I539 application?
Pls guide.
