I hope the culprit(s) are caught and serve VERY LONG sentences.

Do we really know that the British Consulate was targeted? Yes, the BC has offices in the building nearest the ground level blast, but the BC probably occupies one or more floors several floors up in the building - in Chicago the BC was over 10 floors up. A blast outside a building housing the BC should not be immediately construed to be an attack on the BC.

Nowadays large downtown buildings often have their own security, which usually involves searching bags and/or smart card access systems. I had an appointment a while ago at 30 Rockefeller Plaza, NYC, that building had pretty tight security around the elevator area.

In the office building I worked at in Chicago, Joe public got his/her bags searched and were denied access to the elevators absent a confirmed appointment. Those who worked in the building were issued smart cards.

Some tenants occupy whole floors and had some control over who got off at their floor (card or password system in the elevator), but during the elevator “rush hour” someone who gained access to the elevator could just go with the flow and get onto a floor that they don’t have authorization/access, but many firms have a further security check, a smart card to open a door to actually access the office space, and there is usually somebody watching for unfamiliar faces.

Most employers/employees are probably more concerned about an ex-employee coming back and doing a “postal”. But firms that need to be accessible to the public, such as law firms, are very vulnerable. Too much security can make Joe Public go someplace else. So law firms, particularly new law firms, tend to be open and accessible, and hence vulnerable.

Mr Bloomberg told reporters that although the British consulate was housed in the building on Third Avenue, it would be wrong to assume that this was the target of the attack.

The articles I've read have all quoted a variety of officials saying that no motive is known and for people not to jump to conclusions. However, the fact that the general election is going on today in Britain might have something to do with it...
